H.P. Lovecraft pioneered the genre of cosmic horror with his stories, many of which have stood the test of time and inspired modern-day adaptations across feature films, television, anime, manga, video games, tabletop games, audio dramas, and more. Now, news of another upcoming adaptation has broken, confirming that one of Lovecraft’s most underrated horror masterpieces is finally getting a well-deserved adaptation, and the first look is already stunning.
Dark Horse has announced that a manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward will arrive on March 30, 2027. This will be the latest installment in author and illustrator Gou Tanabe’s ongoing H.P. Lovecraft manga series, which continues to deliver darkly stunning adaptations of Lovecraft’s most celebrated horror stories.
H.P. Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward Vol. 1 TP will be 178 pages and will be available for $14.99 at release.
For those who have yet to dive into the horrors of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, the story follows a young man who becomes obsessed with his mysterious ancestor, Joseph Curwen, an 18th-century occultist rumored to have practiced dark magic and alchemy. As Charles investigates his family’s disturbing history and experiments with forbidden knowledge, he descends into increasingly terrifying supernatural circumstances.
Lovecraft originally wrote The Case of Charles Dexter Ward in 1927. However, the novella wasn’t published until 1941, four years after H.P. Lovecraft’s death in 1937.
Naturally, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward falls within the realm of Lovecraft’s signature cosmic horror storytelling. However, fans of supernatural horror, occultism, and ancestral secrets will find this story particularly appealing, especially when paired with Gou Tanabe’s phenomenal, emotionally evocative artwork.

For those looking for a more in-depth explanation of the plot featured in Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation, Dark Horse’s official synopsis is provided below:
It was the 1920s—the Jazz Age, the age of modern wonders. But young Charles Dexter Ward was a dreamer, in love with the antiquities of his native Providence, Rhode Island. Charles was known for the long walks he took around the streets and alleyways of the old colonial city, searching out the traces that still lingered from centuries ago. It would have all seemed a harmless interest in the past…were it not for the fact Charles gradually developed a fixation on his notorious ancestor, Joseph Curwen.
A wealthy merchant before the American Revolution, Curwen, known to have an interest in alchemy and rumored to practice the darker arts of the occult, never appeared to grow any older even as his money increased. But at last Curwen did die–violently—and the records of his life seemed to have been deliberately destroyed. Charles Dexter Ward hunted feverishly through the scraps of information that remained, for his new obsession was to find Curwen’s unmarked grave.
Young Charles hasn’t seemed himself ever since—travelling to strange lands and keeping stranger company. Performing bizarre experiments and chants inside his room, Charles claims to have rediscovered secret knowledge his ancestor possessed that could revolutionize the world. When his erratic and dangerous behavior at last gets him committed to an insane asylum, Charles seemingly escapes…and only his family physician, Dr. Willett, suspecting a hideous truth, now has the courage to pursue the strange case of Charles Dexter Ward!
Readers should also note that the publisher has confirmed H.P. Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward Vol. 1 will be the first installment in an ongoing series. This means Tanabe’s adaptation will span multiple volumes to tell the entire story of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
This multi-volume format isn’t surprising, given that this is one of Lovecraft’s longest and most ambitious works. In fact, it’s reassuring to know Tanabe will give the story room to breathe by spacing it out across multiple volumes rather than rushing through its many unsettling developments.
