The Legend of Zelda is associated very closely with several characters (namely the Princess who appears in the title), but arguably none are as important as our boy Link. Or boys, we should say, as there have been a lot of versions of Link over the years who, although they live in different eras, are bound by the Spirit of the Hero that allows them to do great things.
The earliest incarnation of the character, in terms of the official timeline, is actually the version of Link that appears in Skyward Sword, forging the iconic Master Sword in the process. From there, we move to the Hero of Time and so on, working through thousands of years of lore from his perspective.
Within that, there are further categories of Link that cross through eras, most notably Toon Link, so named for the cartoonish design that Nintendo used in its creation. Now, one of Toon Link’s best appearances is back for a new release, and it comes from some very dedicated fans who have given the game a whole new perspective.
Over on the YouTube channel CryZENx, the user uploaded a video in which they remade The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap in full 3D via Unreal Engine 5. It has to be said first that it looks absolutely spectacular, and it really manages to retain the visual charm of the original release.
It’s important to note that they have only done this with a limited section of the game, but it really does show the potential of what a 3D Minish Cap could be for Nintendo. As you might expect, there were plenty of fans in the responses who were absolutely blown away by what they saw.
“Oh I would pay thousands for a remake of this. This game was Soo emersive and whimsically wondrous, I almost felt like I was in this world. Often made me think of places I’d explore if I could shrink. And the music was always so magical. Nintendo would make bank if they had a 3d version of this,” one comment read.
While another added, “You know what, bro? You’re making my childhood gaming dream come true! I’ve wanted Nintendo to remake The Minish Cap in 3D for such a long time. You have my full support!”
“Man, this is so beautiful, the scenery, the vibe, and everything is art. I hope Nintendo will hire you and actually make the remake, or at least do the collaboration with you,” a third said.
As a preview of what’s possible, a playable version isn’t available right now. That said, given just how positive people are about the video, don’t be surprised if it does evolve into something bigger.
Other than that, Legend of Zelda fans are eating very well indeed, with both the Ocarina of Time Remake and the first ever feature film adaptation coming in the next six months. If both of those hit, the franchise’s 40th birthday really will have been one to remember.
