I live by Anne Shirley’s oft-quoted words: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
Growing up in New England, there was no better place to understand that truth. The crisp air, the blaze of gold and amber leaves, weekends spent hiking or baking something warm and comforting.
But since moving to milder horizons, a new month has quietly taken October’s place in my heart.
November feels different: less spectacle, more soul. It’s when the pace naturally slows, the days grow softer, and home becomes the center of everything. This is the month to light a candle before dinner, to savor the sound of something simmering on the stove, and to fill your calendar with rituals that bring you back to yourself.
Think of what follows as a menu, not a checklist. Pick one or two that fit the time and energy you have this week, and let the rest wait.

Things to Do in November, Sorted by How Much Time You Have
Whether you’re leaning into gratitude, preparing for the holidays, or simply craving a little calm, here are 22 things to do in November, grouped by the kind of time you have. Each one comes with an easy first step.
When You Have a Quiet Moment
There’s a rhythm to this month that invites us to retreat and recalibrate. These small rituals take 15 minutes or less.
1. Plan your coziest weekend. Slow mornings, a comfort movie, and a little fall home organization are the recipe for November bliss. Start here: Choose a film from our best cozy fall day movies and put it on the calendar for Sunday night.
2. Make a monthly Pinterest board. Curl up with a cup of tea and set a seasonal moodboard: recipes to try, outfits to repeat, projects to start. Let inspiration meet intention. Start here: Save five pins tonight, including one recipe, one outfit, and one project.
3. Make gratitude a small habit. Don’t save it for Thanksgiving. Keep a few lines in a notebook, or send a handwritten card to someone who brings you joy. Start here: Write down one thing from today before bed, using one of these gratitude journal prompts, or put one card in the mail this week.
4. Make a simmer pot. Fill your kitchen with the scent of sliced apples, cloves, and cinnamon. Start here: Put a sliced apple, a few cloves, and a cinnamon stick in a pot of water on low heat. Keep an eye on the water level, and never leave it unattended.
5. Ease into the shorter days. The earlier dark is the real shift of this month. Small rituals like soft lighting, a morning walk, and a few moments to pause help keep your energy steady. Start here: Light a candle or switch on a lamp as soon as the light fades, instead of waiting for full dark. If the darker days hit hard, here are some tips for managing seasonal affective disorder, and it’s worth talking to a doctor or therapist if you;re struggling.
6. Order your holiday cards early. Get ahead of the rush so the act of writing them still feels joyful. Start here: Pick the photo and design this week, and order once your list is set.
7. Read something seasonal. Browse our fall reading list for novels that pair perfectly with a cup of tea. Start here: Pick one and read the first chapter tonight.
When You Have Time Outside
November’s light is lovely if you catch it. These get you out the door without much planning.
8. Take a November walk (and bring home a few branches). Go out in the last good light of the day and notice what’s changed on your street. If you find fallen branches or greenery along the way, bring them home for a vase or the Thanksgiving table. Start here: A 15-minute loop around the block at the time you’d usually reach for your phone. Gather only what has already fallen, and check the rules if you’re in a park.
9. Add a few festive touches to your door. Think candlelight, greenery, or a fresh wreath. Small details quietly shift the season’s mood. Start here: Hang one wreath or set a lantern by the door.
10. Shop small this season. Seek out local makers and boutiques, because gifts chosen with intention have a way of becoming the most loved. Start here: Pick one maker or shop you love and buy one gift there.
When You Want Something to Do With Your Hands
When the world outside quiets, creativity fills the space. November’s slower pace is a good time to cook, craft, and make without rushing.
11. Pop something cozy in the oven. Baking is practically a November love language. Try these cozy fall recipes, from pumpkin chocolate chip cookies to Camille’s favorite pumpkin loaf topped with airy cream cheese frosting. Start here: Choose one recipe and add the ingredients to your grocery list.
12. Make pasta from scratch. Try Camille’s sweet potato gnocchi. It’s as comforting as it sounds. Start here: Read the recipe once and pick a slow weekend afternoon.
13. Learn a new craft. Knitting, ceramics, pie design: anything that invites your hands to slow down while your mind unwinds. Start here: Pick one and try a 20-minute beginner tutorial.
14. DIY your holiday décor. From minimalist clay ornaments to Scandinavian-inspired toppers, simple handmade details bring warmth to your space. Start here: Make one ornament before you commit to a dozen.
15. Perfect your present wrapping. Our guide to wrapping the perfect gift turns the task into an art form. Start here: Wrap one present using the guide.
16. Practice simple living. Dry your own herbs, make natural cleaners, or try an infused vinegar, small, satisfying projects that bring calm to your space. Start here: Hang one small bundle of herbs to dry.
When You Want to Gather
At its heart, November is an invitation to reconnect: to gratitude, to gathering, to the rituals that remind us what matters.
17. Host a football Sunday. Big pot of chili, soft blanket, no pressure, just easy connection. Start here: Text two friends and ask them over.
18. Host a girls’ night in. A cozy dinner, a shared playlist, maybe a simple craft: proof that connection doesn’t require an occasion. Start here: Pick a night, send the invite, and ask everyone to bring one thing.
19. Curate the perfect charcuterie board. Layer seasonal fruits, good cheese, and rustic crackers for effortless entertaining at its best. Start here: One cheese, one fruit, one cracker, and something salty.
20. Host Friendsgiving. Potluck-style, low-pressure, and full of laughter, a gathering that feels as good as it tastes. Steal these Friendsgiving recipe ideas for inspo. Start here: Choose a date and ask each guest to bring one dish.
21. Set the table for Thanksgiving. Whether it’s with family, friends, or just you, layer linens, candles, and a few branches from your walk. Our Thanksgiving hosting plan walks you through the timeline, and our table setting ideas show how little it takes. Start here: Pull out your linens and candles a week ahead and see what’s missing.
22. Prep for holiday guests. Stock cozy blankets, snacks, and soft lighting. Our guest room guide covers the rest. Start here: Wash one set of guest bedding and put a blanket at the foot of the bed.
A Month Made for Meaning
November reminds us that slowing down is not a step back; it’s a return to balance. Between the glow of candlelight and the hum of the oven, we find room to embrace the small moments that make a life feel full.
This month, let comfort and creativity lead the way. Savor what’s simple. Celebrate what’s near. And remember: Cozy isn’t just a season; it’s a state of mind.
