Neagley Season 1 Review: So Much More Than A Spinoff

Rarely has there been a hero-adjacent character as intriguing and entertaining as Frances Neagley.

On Prime Video’s Reacher series, she’s been Jack Reacher’s comrade, sounding board, and confidante. At the same time, she’s a confident, butt-kicking, independent badass with no time for fools.

Damn straight, she deserves her own series.

Neagley Season 1 Review: So Much More Than A Spinoff
(Amazon MGM Studios)

Prime Video’s Neagley Season 1

If you did your homework and studied our Neagley Season 1: Everything to Know… primer, you’re already up to speed on the skills, personality, and background Neagley brings to the table.

From the get-go on the premiere, Maria Sten once again demonstrates the calculated intelligence and physical prowess that make Frances Neagley such a good investigator.

With a little help from the parking attendant, she not only rescues a kidnapped child, but also nabs the extortionists.

All in a night’s work. As easy as ringing a bell.

(Sandy Morris/Prime)

Things Get Personal

The season gets rolling with the tragic death of a childhood friend, Tommy Crane, seen in the premiere’s dramatic cold open.

Speaking with Neagley after the memorial, Tommy’s family cannot accept the general belief that he died while high on drugs.

However, they do share that he’d grown distant ever since becoming involved with a cult/collective called Echo Canyon.

When his mother shares a letter he wrote that mentions Neagley, even though the two of them hadn’t spoken in years, Neagley’s Special Investigator antennae go on alert.

(Sabrina Lantos/Prime)

The Unwanted Posse

A key feature Neagley Season 1 shares with the Reacher series is how quickly the players assemble.

By the end of the premiere, Neagley — despite her best efforts — is no longer working alone.

Her boss, Jerry York of York Investigations, recognizes how brilliant an investigator she is but sees her as his firm’s problem child. Goes her own way. Won’t follow the rules. Doesn’t play well with others.

We learn when he reads her the riot act for closing her most recent successful case that he tried giving her a team to run, and it didn’t go well.

Jerry’s problem is that he probably gave her a team of competent operatives with professional courtesy and ethical standards.

(Sabrina Lantos/Prime)

Neagley is, in her own words, “an acquired taste.” She needs a team of misfits. A fast-talking street kid. Maybe a snarky office assistant. Definitely a contrary police detective from a family of criminals.

In every instance, she tells them to take a hike once the job she needed them for is done. And, without exception, they stick with her. How annoying. And absolutely perfect.

The Worst People

Another thing co-creators Santora and Wootton get so right is giving her a giant of a villainous power to take down.

And it’s not just the corrupt, callous, any-means-to-an-end overlord; there’s also his power-drunk, morally destitute, cult-leader puppet and his minions.

(Robin Cymbaly/Prime)

The entire Echo Canyon experience is ick wrapped in woah and topped off with “WTF?!?”

As the layers of conspiracy and disregard for human life peel back, Neagley’s war on injustice takes on crusade-like proportions, with each evidenced evil act they uncover raising the stakes.

It’s an action-packed rollercoaster of a narrative where the rails are always only a suggestion.

You Can’t Touch Her

If that was all Neagley Season 1 served up, it could be justifiably seen as an “if Reacher was a woman” adventure. Super enjoyable, with great humor and the satisfaction of taking down a Big Bad.

But Jack Reacher is defined by being exactly who he presents as. Not to say he doesn’t have depth, but he’s an open book. A really big, muscly open book.

(Sandy Morris/Prime)

Neagly, on the other hand, has chapters inside that she can’t remember reading. Her fear of being touched — medically termed haphephobia — has never been explained.

She only knows that she wasn’t always this way. Photos of her with friends as a child show no issues with touching others or being touched.

However, her father, the only person who could know, refuses to acknowledge that anything is wrong with her, repeatedly stating that it’s just how she is and insisting that’s how she’s always been.

The closer Neagley works with her team, the deeper she digs into Tommy’s experiences at Echo Canyon and the secrets the commune hides, the more determined she becomes to solve her own mystery.

(Sabrina Lantos/Prime)

Confronting her dad causes a heartbreaking chasm between them just as his health takes a final downturn.

Secrets have a way of slipping through the cracks to find the light of day. In the case of Echo Canyon, their cracks result from some horrendous failures in leadership and humanity.

For Neagley, the secrets that caused her condition could fundamentally change her world again.

Burn It Down To Build Again

Neagley Season 1 chooses the ambitious path of cracking through its hero’s shell in order to make her stronger and happier.

It’s not an easy journey, but Neagley’s never been about taking it easy.

(Shane Mahood/Prime)

There will be consequences, but Neagley’s never been afraid to face a challenge.

Finally, she’ll have to let herself depend on people who have never been 110th Special Investigators.

She’ll have to let herself care for people who will put themselves in danger for her.

The Neagley series may have branched off from the Reacher trunk, but it’s ready to stand on its own, as a distinct entity, individual, and unique.

All eight episodes of Neagley Season 1 will drop on September 16 on Prime Video.

I know where I stand on Neagley Season 1, Fanatics. Now, are you with me or what?

How did you feel about Reacher dropping in? Which member of Neagley’s Scooby Gang did you enjoy most? Where do you think Neagley Season 2 will go?
