The elves are one of the most powerful races in The Lord of the Rings. It’s true that their light had dwindled by the Third Age, meaning they were far less of a threat to Sauron and his orcs than they had been before; but they’re still a true force to be reckoned with. Some elves are fierce combatants, warriors like Legolas who engage in some fantastic action scenes. Others possess magic instead; they’re nowhere near as powerful as the wizards, but they’re still great enough to leave the Hobbits awed.
But how do these different elves compare in terms of power level? Here, we’ll look at the elves we spend the most time with in The Lord of the Rings; not those seen in the background, but the ones who actually get the chance to show what they’re capable of. We’ll focus purely on The Lord of the Rings, not on the elves of The Rings of Power, although this will still be relevant on occasion (it is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s notes, after all).

Arwen
Let’s start with Arwen, one of the more frustrating elves to pin down. She certainly possesses all the traditional elven attributes: enhanced senses, grace, and strength and agility beyond human norms. Arwen’s greatest power appears to lie in her insight, which has an almost prophetic quality to it. She was able to see how much effect the Ring had on Frodo, offering counsel to help him deal with its corruption. In his writings, Tolkien hinted that she has a lineage of greatness, but he never revealed any feats.
Peter Jackson’s movies switched Arwen up a little, because there’s a scene where she appears to summon a flood against the Ringwraiths. The films appear to have merged Arwen with Glorfindel, a powerful prophet who was feared by the Nazgûl. But this is a matter of intense debate in the fandom, and there’s no reason to assume Arwen possesses all of Glorfindel’s powers; she simply occupies a substantial part of Glorfindel’s role.

Legolas
Easily the most famous elf in The Lord of the Rings, Legolas is a Sindar elf who joined the Fellowship of the Ring. Like all his race, Legolas lived in harmony with the natural world; he’d used this to develop skills as a hunter, meaning he could walk silently on grass or snow, and his sharp eyes allowed him to see great distances and even in the dark. While this may not sound impressive compared to the rest of the elves, Tolkien insisted Legolas should be considered one of the greatest members of the Fellowship.
He was as tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgûl, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow, the most tireless of all the Fellowship.
Essentially, then, Legolas should be considered a step above the base level for elves; but not that much higher. He’s incredibly agile, remarkably skilled, and benefits from phenomenal experience. But he’s far from a powerhouse.

Elrond
Hailing from the First Age, Elrond is considered one of the oldest and wisest of the elves. At the same time, though, it’s difficult to differentiate his powers from those of Vilya, the Blue Ring, which he bore. Tolkien referred to this as the “mightiest” of the rings, and there’s some speculation his gift of healing may actually be through the elven ring. Whatever the case may be, Elrond became known as the Healer.
Although Elrond was known for his wisdom, he is also an experienced warrior who fought in many of the age’s greatest battles. In the books, he possesses the required magic to summon a flood of water on one occasion; but it’s unknown whether this power was specific and limited, or whether he can in fact manipulate all elements. Still, all this suggests Elrond should be considered one of the most powerful elves, especially given “Mirror of Galadriel” hints the elven Ring-bearers could have wielded the One Ring and supplanted Sauron himself.

Galadriel
The Rings of Power has focused in on Galadriel, but she plays a major role in both the books and Jackson’s film as well. Although “Mirror of Galadriel” hints any Ring-bearer could have supplanted Sauron, it certainly stresses that Galadriel could have; in fact, The Rings of Power has stressed this by hinting Sauron believed Galadriel could become his equal had she fallen under his sway. Thankfully, she did not, and remained a warrior fighting alongside the Fellowship.
Like Elrond, Galadriel is a ring-bearer; this means it’s difficult to say what magic she herself wields, and what powers she possesses because of the ring. That said, she earned the nickname “Mistress of Magic,” which surely indicates the ring only amplified power that was already there. Galadriel’s elemental powers are shown in quite a few scenes in The Lord of the Rings, where she can manipulate both air and water on occasion.
Galadriel’s most intriguing power lies in her ability to perceive hearts and minds. She possesses an instinct for this, one that helped her see through Sauron’s deception back in the Second Age, but her judgment is always tempered by wisdom and grace. When she wishes, though, Galadriel can telepathically invade the minds of others. In The Lord of the Rings, she subjected members of the Fellowship to psychic probes as she looked for Sauron’s influence. This was an uncomfortable experience, even for people who weren’t affected by Sauron.
All in all, then, Galadriel should surely be considered the most powerful elf in The Lord of the Rings. She’s much more of a powerhouse than any other character, although still likely weak compared to wizards and even Sauron himself.
