Duster Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Not Too Cool to Cry

If Duster had a volume knob, this week someone turned it down just a notch.

Duster Season 1 Episode 6 plays more like an old-school action procedural — efficient, unflashy, and more about positioning than revelations. But if you listen closely, the characters are cracking under the surface tension, and even the still moments carry the threat of something about to explode.

This was the calm before the war. And if you’ve been watching closely, you know calm never lasts.

Duster Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Not Too Cool to Cry
(Ursula Coyote/Max)

Nina’s First Big Test — and a Silent Saboteur

Nina finally goes undercover, and while she treats it like a make-or-break assignment, Jim knows better.

He’s seen what Saxton does to people who get too close. He’s also seen what Nina does when she digs in — she’s relentless, and unfortunately for him, brave enough to die on this hill.

But she’s not just up against Sax and his men. She’s got an unexpected obstacle in Agent Chad Grant, aka The World’s Most Boring Snake.

His uninspired parking lot surveillance nearly blows her cover before she even gets in the door. He’s not slick. He’s not subtle. And he definitely shouldn’t be anywhere near a real investigation.

Even Billy, the unhinged wildcard of this operation, smells something off and traces the license plate.

Nina’s quick thinking (and sudden, teary abuse backstory involving “Trevor”) saves the day — for now. But let’s be clear: Chad’s a problem. He’s inserted himself where he doesn’t belong, and someone’s going to notice, probably right before he takes a bullet.

(Ursula Coyote/Max)

Jim Plays Kissinger

Thanks to a recommendation from Royce, Jim’s trying out for a promotion.

First up? Handle Greek Sal’s angry goons and smooth things over after last episode’s Bonnie and Clyde (er… The Graduate) stunt.

With Billy at his side and Henry Kissinger as his spirit animal, Jim does what he does best — improvises like hell and somehow walks out alive.

The real test comes later, when the Russians show up for a million-dollar deal and everything spirals. Royce, off his meds and emotionally unstable, crumbles during the money count, shifting from tears to hysterics to rage.

(Ursula Coyote/Max)

Saxton’s face is priceless — pure confusion — but it’s Nina and Jim who spin gold out of chaos.

They paint Royce as a legendary warrior who literally fought through his heart being ripped out. Jim rips open Royce’s shirt like a magician on a Vegas stage, and miraculously, the Russians buy it.

What was the deal for? No one’s sure. Xavier’s name gets tossed around again, but the threads are still loose. If this episode did anything, it reminded us: none of these people know who’s holding the real power.

And while we’re on the topic of unspoken things, did you catch the look Jim gave Nina when she dressed his wound? Shippers of Nina and Awan might need a recovery moment. These two aren’t just bonding under pressure — they’re becoming each other’s exit strategy.

(Ursula Coyote/Max)

Izzy’s War — and Sax’s Response

Over on the home front, Izzy’s protest against Bob Temple finally hits the streets.

With Luna handing out beers (well, at least it seems like that’s all she does) and news crews circling, it becomes clear the women’s movement isn’t just a subplot — it’s a powder keg. Especially when we find out Temple’s business is tied to Saxton.

That’s bad news for Izzy. Jim looks stricken watching her on the evening news, knowing full well how Sax deals with problems. His worst fear is confirmed: Sax wants her handled. And in this world, “handled” never means “let’s talk it out.”

So now Jim’s got another impossible task: protect the mother of his child without exposing his role, his loyalty, or his soul.

Oh, and did we mention? He finally admits to Nina that Luna is his daughter. The way he says it? Heartbreaking. If he dies, don’t tell her — just tell her to keep the Duster purring like a kitten. That’s his legacy, and it’s quietly devastating.

(Ursula Coyote/Max)

Notes from the Glovebox

  • The Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid framing was perfect. When Nina says, “You know they die at the end,” and Jim shrugs it off, you get the feeling he’d rather go out in a blaze of dumb luck than rot in place.
  • Billy comparing Jim to Kissinger might be the strangest compliment anyone has ever received after lying their way through a deal.
  • Royce continues to be both tragic and darkly hilarious. The moment he flips from sobbing to shouting in front of Volkov? Cinema.
  • Nina giving Awan her necklace “just in case” was a quiet reminder that she doesn’t expect to survive this. But if there’s a future for her, Jim might be the one dragging her into it.
  • That bullet grazing Jim felt like a teaser: someone’s going to get shot for real next time. Any bets on Chad?
(Ursula Coyote/Max)

How the Dust Settled

This was Duster on cruise control — less flash, more maneuvering. But there’s value in the quiet episodes.

They let us see who people become when they don’t have to run or lie or kill in the moment. And here’s what we saw:

  • Jim wants to be something more — but he doesn’t know if he deserves it.
  • Nina wants justice — but she’s running out of faith.
  • Royce wants respect — but no one takes him seriously.
  • Izzy wants change — and Sax is already planning to shut her up.

Three episodes to go. And the road ahead is looking anything but smooth.

(Ursula Coyote/Max)

But what about you?

Is Chad Grant the worst fed in history — or is he playing his own long game?

Did Nina and Jim just become the couple we didn’t know we needed?

And what’s your theory on Xavier? Is he the real puppet master — or just another name on the board?

Drop your thoughts below and keep the Duster love alive. If you’re still with us on this ride, we’re glad you’re buckled in.

Duster Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Not Too Cool to Cry
