Republicans Were Mean To Him * The Gateway Pundit * by Antonio Graceffo

Anthony Fauci’s July 29 congressional testimony generated extensive media coverage, but the reporting revealed a sharp divide in how the hearing was portrayed. The coverage underscores the left-leaning agenda of the mainstream media. Right-leaning media have concentrated on the facts of the case, the questions asked, and the evidence they argue shows that Fauci knew social distancing and lockdowns were ineffective and that the vaccines may have been harmful.

Left-leaning mainstream media outlets, by contrast, defended Fauci’s decision to invoke the Fifth Amendment while overlooking what his silence left unanswered. They framed the questioning itself, not Fauci’s refusal to answer, as the story and characterized the hearing as partisan theater, with little attention to the substance of the gain-of-function, lockdown, and vaccine-safety questions being asked.

Evidence for the inquiry derives from the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic’s report, *After Action Review of the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Lessons Learned and a Path Forward*, a 520-page final report released in December 2024 after a two-year, bipartisan-membership investigation that included more than 100 investigative letters, 38 interviews or depositions, 25 hearings, and review of over a million pages of documents.

The report concluded that SARS-CoV-2 likely leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan rather than emerging naturally, based on the virus’s biological characteristics and illnesses among researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in the fall of 2019. It found that the NIH funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and that EcoHealth Alliance, which subawarded those NIH grants, failed to properly oversee the experiments, facilitated the gain-of-function work, and misled the NIH about its research.

The report also concluded that Chinese and U.S. government agencies, along with some members of the international scientific community, sought to cover up facts about the pandemic’s origins.

On mitigation measures, the subcommittee found that masking and social distancing mandates were not based on hard science. It also concluded that the 6-foot social distancing guidance was not supported by science, despite being forcefully implemented by state and local governments. Finally, the report found that prolonged lockdowns caused severe harm to the American economy and to Americans’ mental and physical health, with a particularly negative effect on the young.

Irrespective of this evidence, during his closed-door interview with the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on January 9, 2024, Fauci said he remained “not convinced” that children suffered learning loss from pandemic school closures. Beyond the research pointing the other way, it should be self-evident that years of interrupted in-person learning harm children. If Fauci cannot see, or will not admit, so obvious a consequence of his own policies, it raises broader questions about what else he has declined to acknowledge.

Fauci testified on July 29, 2026, before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Sen. Rand Paul, who had subpoenaed him. He invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times during the hearing, which lasted well over two hours. Most media outlets reported that he invoked the Fifth 111 times.

His refusal extended even to innocuous, non-incriminating questions. Sen. Josh Hawley asked what day of the week it was, what color tie Fauci was wearing, and what color the carpet in front of him was. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to each question. Before doing so, he delivered a brief opening statement, arguing that Paul’s “obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution” justified his refusal to testify. Paul has accused Fauci of lying to Congress about gain-of-function research and whether NIH funding reached the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Fauci’s Fifth Amendment claim is complicated by the fact that, on his way out of office in January 2025, President Biden issued him a preemptive pardon covering conduct dating back to 2014. The pardon covered a roughly 10-year period and applied to offenses “arising from or in any manner related to” Fauci’s government service, even though he had not been charged with any crime.

Republicans, including Hawley and Paul, argued that the pardon undercuts Fauci’s basis for invoking the Fifth Amendment because he can no longer be prosecuted for the underlying conduct it covers. Paul said after the hearing that the committee would vote the following week on referring Fauci for contempt of Congress over his refusal to testify. Such a charge would arise from Fauci’s conduct during the hearing itself and would therefore fall outside the scope of Biden’s pardon, which covers only conduct through January 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, left-leaning mainstream media coverage focused on the investigation itself instead of the underlying allegations. PBS NewsHour reported that Democrats defended Fauci and dismissed the hearing as a waste of time, quoting Sen. Gary Peters, who said, “One-sided investigations designed to validate predetermined conclusions do not serve the American people.”

PBS, however, misses the point that the hearing became one-sided only because Fauci refused to answer the questions. A congressional hearing exists to examine the allegations before it and establish the facts. It was Fauci’s refusal to answer a single question, not the structure of the investigation, that prevented those allegations from being explored. A hearing cannot be “two-sided” if one side declines to participate.

That framing continued across other outlets. ABC News reported that Democrats on the committee defended Fauci’s right to plead the Fifth and thanked him for his years of service, using their time to condemn the hearing as a fishing expedition.

CNN’s coverage took a similar approach. The network reported that friends and advisers said Fauci’s legal team concluded there was little to be gained by engaging with the committee. The coverage validated his decision to remain silent while giving little attention to what that silence left unresolved. CNN also quoted Sen. Maggie Hassan telling Fauci directly that the hearing was “designed to entrap” him and that it “must be enormously frustrating” for him.

Instead of scrutinizing Republicans for continuing to press for answers, several networks recast the questioning itself as the problem. On ABC’s Good Morning America, co-host George Stephanopoulos said it was “a sign of the times” that the hearing turned out to be “as partisan as it gets.” Correspondent Jay O’Brien agreed, describing the hearing as “fiery.”

CBS News framed the hearing as one in which Fauci “was grilled by Republicans… while Democrats came to his aid, decrying what they saw as a politically motivated effort to denigrate him.” That language positions Fauci as the target of the proceeding, not a witness who declined to answer questions about his own record.

Axios described a related 2024 hearing as having “descended into the type of dramatic, attention-grabbing partisan infighting” that has come to define recent Congresses. Again, the focus was on the tone of the questioning instead of what the questions were actually about.

In each of these cases, the coverage treated Republicans’ continued questioning about gain-of-function funding, the harms of lockdowns, and vaccine safety monitoring as the notable event, not Fauci’s refusal to answer those questions.

None of the coverage paused to examine the human and economic toll of the policies Fauci championed. That included the school closures, the lockdowns that the subcommittee later found were not supported by science, and the vaccine safety questions Sen. Ron Johnson raised about the VAERS and V-safe monitoring systems, which he said were “deluged with complaints.”
