With the long wait for the release of Marvel’s Wolverine nearly at an end, many of the biggest questions surrounding the game are what kind of gameplay content fans can expect to see when it launches. Although we’ve already had more than a few examples of Wolverine‘s abilities, the enemies, and the world you’ll get to experience when Marvel’s Wolverine drops this year, fans are especially stoked over one confirmed gameplay mechanic.
With the gameplay trailer at this year’s PlayStation State of Play having added even more fuel to the fire of excitement over which additional characters you’ll get to fight alongside in Marvel Wolverine‘s story, its co-op potential could be even more than we bargained for.
As noted by Longjumping_Sign2249 on Reddit, an interview between IGN and the developers of Marvel’s Wolverine has confirmed that while we won’t be able to play as Jean Grey, as the initial leaks for the game suggested, the full release will include several missions where you fight cooperatively with AI companions in the form of Jean, and even fighting alongside Wolverine’s nemesis, Sabretooth.
Although it might not be the two-player co-op that many fans had been hoping for following the single-player-only Spider-Man games, the confirmation that we’ll get to play alongside several iconic characters already has plenty of players stoked by its gameplay and story potential.
One example is players proposing the idea of Sabretooth “showing Wolverine up in Team-Up gameplay, and then turning on your eventually,” which other fans followed up by saying that “if we don’t fight Sabretooth I’m gonna be pissed.” Given that Sabretooth will apparently compete with you for kills during combat and plays far more aggressively than Jean, it wouldn’t be too surprising either, and could make for some incredibly memorable story twists as well.
Another benefit fans pointed out of having Wolverine as the sole playable character, aside from the thematic fact that “Logan is Marvel’s biggest loner,” it also means we don’t have to “do any Jean Puzzle missions,” similar to the infamously contraversial ones in the previous Spider-Man games.
Although its hard to imagine a character as powerful as Jean Grey being reduced to puzzles or frustrating stealth sections, players are still praising Marvel Wolverine‘s choice for eliminating the possibility entirely, saying “thank goodness, no MJ missions, we’re saved.”
Thankfully, if you’re still disappointed that you won’t get to play as even more familiar X-Men characters in Marvel’s Wolverine than the titular character himself, Insomniac Games already has several other Marvel-themed sequels in the works that should be able to scratch your itch.
