HBO’s Harry Potter has set itself up to go far beyond the eyes of its titular character. The upcoming TV series, which premieres its first season on December 25, 2026, is meant to be a more book-faithful adaptation than Warner Bros.’ film franchise has managed. This means all those big moments that were cut from the films can be restored to the screen all these years later. It’s an excellent opportunity, especially since some of the most impactful characters and themes in Harry Potter were lost during the initial adaptation process.
This isn’t to say by any means that the Harry Potter movies are bad. In truth, no screen adaptation of a book can be perfect, and the same will be true for HBO’s series. Still, it’s much harder to include all the nuance of a novel into an hour-and-some-long film. Harry Potter would be especially difficult to adapt, since, though told from Harry’s perspective, it’s not only his story that carries weight toward the conclusion.
In truth, Harry is quite famously a character who just happened to be in all the right places at the right time. There are several generations’ worth of stories that contribute to his victory over Lord Voldemort, and when we map out these various stories and connect events with all our red thread, it’s not Harry Potter who stands at the center of it all. This is a fact that is much easier to see in the books, but virtually impossible in the films. Now, HBO’s Harry Potter has set itself up to put the truth on screens once and for all.
The Harry Potter Movies Ignored The Real Hero Of The Series
Harry Potter may have been the Boy Who Lived, but Lily Evans was the true hero of the overarching story. The books make it clear that she was magnetic, clever, and kind. It’s repeatedly emphasized that while Harry was often compared to James, it was Lily who provided him with his best qualities. It was this electric, contagious goodness that led Lily to become friends with Severus Snape. It was her conviction that made her step away from the friendship when it became unhealthy. It was also she who caused Voldemort’s downfall.
Harry fought Voldemort for seven years before finally bringing him down, but even then, the victory was assured only because of all that Lily had done during her lifetime. Her friendships, combined with the sacrificial love she felt for her son, paved the way for the definitive defeat of Voldemort. This is, of course, all technically true in the Harry Potter movies, but there wasn’t nearly enough attention or emphasis placed on it.
In the Harry Potter books, we have a rather complete sense of Lily’s character by the end. Her death may have kicked off the story, but the narrative still found plenty of ways to help us get to know the ins and outs of her personality and identity. The movies didn’t have time for all this. The actor that was cast was older than what Lily should have been when she died, and she got almost no screen time or meaningful mention. We can already tell that it will be different in the Harry Potter show.
Harry Potter’s Casting Implies A Closer Look At Key Book Themes
Because the Harry Potter TV show aims to be more faithful to the books, it absolutely has to delve deeper into Lily Evans’ story. Still, that’s not the only reason we have to believe that this version of the story will recentralize this character. The trailer for Harry Potter season 1 appears to show Lily and James running across a sparkling bridge, and there are set images of a cloaked figure in a neighborhood on Halloween. These suggest that the new series will feature flashback scenes centered on Harry’s parents, both their lives and their deaths.
Another good sign is that Hannah Chinn has been cast to play Lily in the HBO series. This is a young actor who is much closer to the age Lily would have been when she died (only 21), a detail that was overlooked in the WB movies’ casting. The fact that this detail is being recognized further suggests that the TV series is taking Lily, her arc, and her overall purpose to the story seriously.
With Lily taking on a more prominent role through more flashback scenes, HBO’s Harry Potter can finally recapture the themes of the original books. So much of this story is about motherhood. There are several layers of exploration in this regard, as different arcs explore how mothers can cause harm, do good, or inspire an astounding sort of magic. In many ways, Harry Potter is just an exploration of how powerful—how magical—a mother’s love really is. For that point to come across, Lily has to reclaim her central position.
