Power: Origins has found its Ghost and Tommy.
To our delight, Deadline broke the news that Spence Moore and Charlie Mann are set to step into the roles of the younger James St. Patrick and Tommy Egan, as Starz looks to keep the long-running Power franchise alive with a new prequel.
It’s arguably the biggest casting yet in the franchise, as delving into the history of Ghost and Tommy is something fans have wanted since the series began.
Not to put too much pressure on the young men stepping into the roles, but finding out how Ghost and Tommy became Ghost and Tommy is the most-anticipated story for fans.
Moore, most recently seen in Brilliant Minds and All American, will step into the shoes famously filled by Omari Hardwick, bringing to life those early years on the streets that we’ve heard about throughout various series.
When we met Ghost in Power, he was a ruthless drug dealer looking to leave his life behind and ultimately balance the life of James St. Patrick with that of Ghost.
Mann, who was most recently in the BBC crime thriller Virdee, will play Tommy.
Much like Moore, Mann will be stepping into a role that Joseph Sikora has perfected over the years, as the hotheaded and explosive Egan.
When we met Ghost and Tommy, their dynamic was strong, but it slowly unraveled over the course of the series.
And if we’re being real, things started going downhill for Ghost and almost all of his personal relationships the minute his one true love, Angela Valdes, showed up at his nightclub.
While we don’t have any information about Angela being a part of the prequel, one can imagine she plays a role, as she grew up alongside Ghost and Tommy.
That awkward trio had many issues over the course of Power’s run, as did the trio of Ghost, Tommy, and Kanan.
It has been confirmed that MeKai Curtis will reprise his role as Kanan from Power Book III: Raising Kanan in the sequel, and it’s probably safe to assume that a large part of the series will circle around the threesomes’ rise to power, which we already know was fraught with ego and betrayal.
When Raising Kanan premiered, many people were lukewarm about seeing Kanan’s backstory, as he’d always been such a polarizing character.
But not only did Curtis knock it out of the park in channeling 50 Cent’s mannerisms and dialect, but the story around him, as well as the characters, were engaging in a way that turned Raising Kanan into a sleeper hit.
Much like Power Book II: Ghost turned the insufferable Tariq St. Patrick into a likable antihero, Raising Kanan has added layers and depth to a character that we only knew at his very worst.
Power: Origins now has the chance to give us that insight into those characters we met at the peak of their success in the drug business before life got messy, feelings and aspirations changed, and brotherhood was put to the ultimate test.
