Grace, Growth & Evolution: Cape Fear, Brilliant & Criminal Minds Impress

This week’s characters refused to stay the same.

From hard-won breakthroughs and deeply personal reckonings, these characters were all about transformation.

Our TV Fanatic staff members break down their picks, so dive in!

Anna – Cape Fear

(Courtesy of Apple TV)

Amy Adams is turning in the performance of her career as Anna in Apple TV’s reimagining of the hit movies and novel.

In particular, she’s playing a defense attorney who is unafraid to go against even the most formidable of foes.

During Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3, she was forced into going on a field trip with Max, the man she may have sent to prison for 17 years for a crime he didn’t commit — or so that’s what we’re being led to believe.

The powerful installment found Anna trying to come to terms with Max’s motivations while simultaneously getting him a huge payday for an attack he endured while in prison.

Then, at home, she was getting crafty and breaking the law to learn the truth about her son’s secret friends.

She’s a delightful character, but I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of her! – Paul Dailly

Chef Erik – Sweet Magnolias

(Netflix/Screenshot)

Dion Johnstone got more emotional material as Chef Erik in Sweet Magnolias Season 5 than all the others combined.

While Erik seemed stubborn at times, he took us on an unremarkable journey as family expectations and new romantic journeys met.

The emotional season found Erik torn between pleasing his rigid parents and his bold and beautiful bride. He had been following the Whitley Way for years and struggled to break free.

It wasn’t until Erik saw tendencies of himself in his niece that he knew he wanted her to experience life differently, so he vowed to change, and he wanted his family to as well.

As someone who loves to tinker in the kitchen, I loved learning the history of his family recipes and seeing Erik’s brownies on display at the wedding.

It was the ideal way to honor his family, Helen, and his friendship with Issac. Erik learned so much about embracing joy and balancing expectations. I can’t wait to see what’s next. – Laura Nowak

Lance — Criminal Minds: Evolution

(Parmaount/Screenshot)

There are a few people who shock JJ when in the interrogation room, but Lance managed it. Just not in the way that you would expect!

Getting to see Connor Storrie on Criminal Minds was everything we needed. He proved his ability to act (because Lance was definitely not Ilya), and there’s just something about Lance that makes him intriguing.

While he was only supposed to be in one episode, we get this hint that he’s hiding something deep, and he’ll become a real pain for the BAU.

The anger didn’t shock the BAU agents. They’ve seen all that before. It was Lance’s lack of reaction to the leaking pen that told Tara and JJ he wasn’t the guy they were after.

Lance tried to remain stoic after Luke walked in, but the look of fear when Luke hinted that he needed protection further suggests he knows something.

He quickly became a potential UnSub to watch, even if he’s not The Fan. – Alexandria Ingham

June Lenker – Criminal Record

(Courtesy of Apple TV)

After Criminal Record’s Season 2 finale, I can honestly say I don’t know where the series will go with June, but she’s forever changed and evolved.

The Cosmo alt-right case pushed June to new heights all season, and the culmination of that came during the finale when she felt the closest she’s come to Hegarty as an equal partner in this ordeal.

And arguably, in life, too. Their shared devotion to the job when their personal lives fell apart around them came into focus after June’s marriage ended tragically, and it seemed the only person who could fully relate to her was Hegarty.

All season, we saw June asserting herself and trying to figure out whether Hegarty was an ally in this operation or a hindrance. They clashed over different ideologies regarding how to resolve the case.

But interestingly, we see June reach a point where her worldview and moral lines evolve. Her idealism, naivete, and rigid view of how to pursue justice become skewed. She takes an important step.

And it’s fascinating. It leaves her in such an uncertain place, something that Cush Jumbo makes you feel throughout the entire hour. – Jasmine Blu

Oliver Wolf – Brilliant Minds

( Pief Weyman/NBC)

The real pity of the back half of Brilliant Minds Season 2 is that it’s finally reminding us of its brilliance, but it feels too late.

Brilliant Mind Season 2 Episode 17 is a wonderful hour in which Oliver shows real progress, showcasing the beauty of healing and how slow-moving it can be.

It’s the closest we come to seeing him like himself again, as he latches onto Reagan, treating her for a neurological condition while still under treatment himself. And he does it with the assistance of Josh, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the hour.

But through Oliver, we see what it’s like when therapy, mental respite, and making peace with things can actually do. And all the while knowing that this reprieve hasn’t “fixed” him. He still has some work to do on his own.

And he’s willing to do it, too. There were many compelling moments throughout the hour, but the most pivotal one that the season has built up to was his honest, vulnerable conversation with Charlie.

He not only is able to extend grace and forgiveness to Charlie, but also allows us to do the same, mostly, but he puts a name to Charlie’s pain, allows him to recognize that he needs to get help, too, and it’s a great moment of growth for Oliver.

Over to you, TV Fanatics. Who made your list? Sound off below!
