Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Gave Erik and Helen Their Hard-Earned Happy Ending

Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Gave Erik and Helen Their Hard-Earned Happy Ending

Can I scream that my favorite couple finally tied the knot? It was a long, hard battle to get there, but they made it.

Throughout Sweet Magnolias, the series often focused more on the ladies’ feelings and motivations in their friendships and romances. The viewers are in for a treat.

Sweet Magnolias Season 5 flipped the script. While we saw lots of Helen, the series dove into Erik’s family drama and explored his upbringing and how it clashed with his relationship with Helen.

(Courtesy of Netflix)

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, you know how challenging it can be to balance family expectations with your desires.

Erik felt immense pressure from his rigid family and his passionate bride, which made for a dramatic season in which he learned the importance of honoring his own beliefs and speaking his truth.

Erik and Helen Appeared Blissfully Happy Until He Worried About Appearances

At the beginning of Sweet Magnolias Season 5, Erik and Helen seemed blissfully happy and madly in love.

It was romantic yet hilarious how they had two different ideas for their honeymoon. I hope Erik wins, especially if they do a location shot in Paris.

They would be so romantic to honeymoon in the city of love, and a chef could appreciate that even more.

(Courtesy of Netflix)

However, when the couple began planning the actual wedding, Erik seemed unsettled. Part of that was because his parents weren’t overly fond of his late wife, so he had a do-over with planning and wanted to please them and appease Helen.

Helen didn’t understand why he wouldn’t ask his brother to be involved or why his parents wouldn’t love anything they planned, since her mom and brother were so excited.

She wanted to help, but Erik knew how his family worked.

Erik used to admire Helen’s way of solving problems, so I disliked him insinuating she couldn’t fix it with “Magnolia magic.”

You couldn’t totally fault Helen and her cajoling and sarcasm. Erik wouldn’t confide in her. Using “Whitley” as a word for complicated in a crossword puzzle fit perfectly, but probably didn’t amuse Erik.

No One Should Tone Down Helen’s Boldness

(Netflix/Screenshot)

Helen Decatur is bold and beautiful, and she wanted everyone to appreciate her and Erik’s passionate yet imperfect relationship. That’s why I love and respect her.

She didn’t understand why their wedding should cater to other people’s desires when the wedding should’ve focused on them.

I suspect that’s why Helen struggled to select a wedding gown. She feared her dream would go up in flames or that she would embarrass Erik in front of his family on what should have been the happiest day of her life.

I know wedding planning is stressful, but bright, colorful flowers just screamed Helen. While using white blooms with the blue bridesmaid dresses would technically match, it didn’t fit the bride’s personality or their relationship.

I understood Helen’s frustration. There is nothing more frustrating than when your man wants things to be perfect, but he’s not on the same page.

(Netflix/Screenshot)

As a lawyer, Helen longed to communicate and fix things, and Erik wouldn’t open up. But the turning point was when he kept insisting that he wanted his family’s acceptance.

My heart went out to Helen because she thought they were building a family, and she was the most important person in his life. I know how much she loved Erik, but she needed him to take a hard look at his priorities.

Erik Learned More About Himself and The Whitley Way From His Niece

Erik (Dion Johnstone) has always been meticulous about details and never talked about why he moved to Serenity. Everyone assumed it was because he needed space to grieve after Vera died.

While that was part of it, he needed to get away from his father’s ridicule and harassment. As a result, everything was left on his brother Victor’s shoulders, and their relationship worsened.

Erik didn’t realize how horrible things had gotten until his niece, Jessica, arrived unexpectedly.

(Courtesy of Netflix)

Jessica quickly became one of my favorite characters because while she was raised to be polite and poised, she also believed in communicating to solve problems like Helen.

She left her house because her parents were going through an ugly divorce, and her father took his frustration out on her and her college grades.

She had hoped to find a haven with Erik and Helem, not thinking about the stress they’d be under.

Having Jessica there for the summer changed things for Erik. He and Helen already mentored his kitchen staff and Annie and CeCe, but Jessica reminded him of a younger version of himself with her ideals.

She also heard so much of the Whitley Way that she believed Erik left home and abandoned his family to become a chef. She wanted to see why it appealed to him and be like him.

At the same time, Jessica grew fond of Helen, urging Erik not to follow the Whitleys unthinkingly when he had such a loyal, loving partner.

(Netflix/Screenshot)

She helped him realize he could honor the Whitleys and Helen by balancing both, while Erik and Helen assisted Jessica in reconciling with her father.

Erik and Helen Fought for Each Other, and It Was Worth It

While wedding planning can be fun, marriage is hard work, and it’s even more challenging when you include your spouse’s family.

Erik was lucky. Bev Decatur adored him because he made her daughter happy. Erik’s family was all about fitting into rules and regimens and family loyalty.

While it seemed like his parents liked Helen, he seemed scared to rock the boat and seemed determined to have an understated wedding.

Helen wanted to support Erik, but she needed her voice heard, too, since, as his future wife, her desires should have been more important than his parents’.

(Netflix/Screenshot)

I was totally team Helen. It was heartbreaking that it took a tragedy for Erik to realize that Helen was the most important person in his life, but I loved that make-up scene.

It included fiery passion and sincere, emotional remorse. We learned so much about Erik in that scene.

He really is attracted to strong, passionate, and independent women, who are the exact opposite of his parents.

He feared his parents would never treat Helen as more than a polite stranger after his experience of how they treated Vera, and that fear overtook him.

I appreciated that Erik knew he messed up and asked for forgiveness. It was never a question of Helen breaking up with, but more getting their visions aligned again.

(Courtesy of Netflix)

He underestimated Helen because she worked her magic to bring peace to his family. I was impressed when his mother realized they had pushed Erik away, and Helen promised they’d each hold a part of him.

The Wedding Represented Erik and Helen Perfectly

Weddings should represent both couples, and in the end, their wedding represented Erik and Helen beautifully.

I’m tickled pink that Heather Headley won, and Helen got the elaborate and elegant wedding she longed for, right down to the long lacy veil.

How wonderful it was that the entire female community helped to make her veil, because they were excited for her and Erik.

The attire was all Helen, but the cuisine was pure Erik. His kitchen staff is like family to him, so I loved that they prepared the wedding feast, and Issac performed double duty, standing up for Erik.

(Netflix/Screenshot)

Erik had never entrusted anyone with his grandmother’s brownie recipe before Issac, so that was a huge step.

But those brownies were one of the things Helen loved best about Erik since he first brought them to cheer her up. They’ve been a mainstay in their relationship, so it made perfect sense to display them at the wedding.

It’s difficult to pinpoint the best part of the wedding since there were so many emotional moments.

However, I would choose Helen, singing Heather Headley’s original song, “If It Wasn’t For Your Love,” to Erik before the first dance. There was something magical about that scene.

Sweet Magnolias has featured some poignant weddings over the years, but this one held a special place in my heart.

(Netflix/Screenshot)

Helen and Erik fought to get here, and we actually saw the wedding planning and the parties.

These two have come so far over the years. While I’d love to see them foster some teenagers in their next chapter, if Sweet Magnolias does end, I’m thrilled they got their happy ending.

Over to you, TV Fanatics. Did you enjoy learning more about Chef Erik? Were you as enchanted by the wedding as I was? What else would you like to see for the couple?

Let us know in the comments.

Love Sweet Magnolias? We do too — and we want to keep writing about it.
