Charles Darwin did not leave every difficult problem at his desk. At Down House in Kent, he repeatedly walked a secluded loop around a small wood, using the route to think while his body moved. Nearly two centuries later, experiments on walking and studies of large-scale brain networks offer a plausible account of why such a routine could be useful. Movement can widen the flow of ideas, and reduced external demands can give memory, imagination and association more room to interact.
Darwin made a path into part of his working day
The route was called the Sandwalk. Darwin planted the copse and followed the sandy path around it, often with his fox terrier. He used flints to keep count of his circuits, although family stories say his children sometimes interfered with the tally. The path was exercise, observation and uninterrupted thought folded into one repeated ritual.
English Heritage says Darwin walked the Sandwalk just about daily, thinking through puzzles and devising experiments as he went. The preserved route is about a quarter of a mile long. It was not an escape from his science. Like the gardens, greenhouse and nearby fields, it became part of how he worked.
That history is stronger than the claim that a particular insight occurred on a particular circuit. No diary can reveal the causal contribution of each walk to natural selection. What survives is a disciplined habit and Darwin’s own description of the route as a thinking path.
A modern experiment gave the old intuition legs
In 2014, psychologists Marily Oppezzo and Daniel Schwartz reported four experiments comparing thinking while seated with thinking while walking. Their central test was the alternate-uses task. A participant sees an ordinary object, such as a button or tyre, and tries to generate unusual but workable uses for it. The task measures divergent thinking, the ability to produce multiple possible answers rather than retrieve one known answer.
Walking increased creative output on the divergent-thinking task for most participants in the first experiment. The effect appeared when people walked on a treadmill facing a blank wall, so scenery was not required. It also appeared outdoors, and participants retained some benefit when they sat down after walking.
A wheelchair condition helped separate movement from exposure to an outdoor environment. Outdoor stimulation could improve some responses, but walking itself had an effect. The study therefore offered more than the familiar advice to “get fresh air.” Rhythmic movement seemed to alter idea generation even indoors.
Divergent thinking is not the whole of creativity
The result is easy to exaggerate. Walking did not reliably improve the compound remote associates task, which asks for the one word linking three others. That is a more convergent problem. It requires narrowing possibilities toward a single answer rather than opening many routes.
Creative work needs both modes. A scientist may generate several explanations, then eliminate the ones that conflict with evidence. A writer may imagine ten scenes, then choose the one that belongs. A designer may produce many sketches, then test constraints. The 2014 experiments support walking as a tool for generating possibilities, not as a universal enhancer of judgment, accuracy or finished creative achievement.
They also did not scan participants’ brains. The behavioural result and the neuroscience belong to related but separate lines of evidence. Walking improved a laboratory measure of divergent thinking; brain studies help explain what kinds of internal operations can support such thinking.
The default network is active when attention turns inward
The brain does not simply switch off when it is not concentrating on an external task. A set of connected regions known as the default mode network becomes prominent during internally directed cognition. It contributes to autobiographical memory, imagining the future, simulating scenes, considering other minds and producing spontaneous thought.
Those functions supply raw material for creativity. A new idea often depends on retrieving elements acquired at different times and placing them into an unfamiliar relationship. The network can search beyond whatever is immediately visible, allowing an old observation, a recent conversation and a half-formed hypothesis to enter the same mental workspace.
Evidence is becoming more direct. In a study of patients who already had implanted electrodes for clinical reasons, researchers recorded activity across default-network regions during mind wandering and an alternate-uses task. Stimulation of those regions preferentially reduced the originality of divergent-thinking responses. The sample included only 13 patients, but the intervention went beyond finding a correlation between brain activity and a creativity score.
Insight depends on cooperation, not one “creative centre”
The default network does not manufacture complete ideas alone. Creative cognition also recruits executive-control systems that help maintain goals, check relevance and shape an association into something usable. The salience network may help notice which internally generated thought deserves attention.
An fMRI study found that default and executive networks increased their coupling during stages of divergent thinking. A larger analysis across 10 independent samples later linked creative ability with dynamic switching between these systems. The emerging picture is not a single creativity spot. It is a changing conversation among networks that usually serve different purposes.
This is also why internally focused thought does not mean abandoning control. The mind may generate remote associations, but another system must evaluate whether they answer the problem. Incubation helps under some conditions, not all
A walk may be valuable partly because it creates a mild, familiar activity after focused work. The problem remains available, but the person is no longer forcing the same search repeatedly. This is the idea behind incubation: stepping away can change which associations become accessible when attention returns.
In a 2012 experiment, people first worked on unusual-uses problems and then spent a break on a demanding task, an undemanding task, rest or no break. The undemanding task produced the largest improvement on problems participants had already encountered, and it also produced more mind wandering. The result fits the intuition that gentle occupation can let a seeded problem continue developing outside narrow focus.
Mind wandering is not automatically beneficial, however. A 2025 study of 85 participants found no significant benefit of mind wandering for divergent thinking, although incubation improved fluency on repeated items and some aware mind wandering helped easier convergent problems. Context, awareness, task type and whether the problem was encountered before all changed the outcome.
A thinking walk is a method, not a guarantee
Darwin’s Sandwalk cannot be retroactively turned into a neuroscience experiment. He had deep knowledge, relentless correspondence, careful observation, notebooks, collaborators and decades of revision. Walking was one component of a much larger intellectual system. The modern studies do not prove that it caused his insights.
They do suggest a useful sequence. First, load the problem by reading, observing or attempting it. Then walk at a comfortable pace on a route that does not demand constant navigation. Leave enough quiet for thoughts to move rather than replacing the desk with calls, messages or a podcast. Record promising ideas when the walk ends. Finally, return to focused work and test them.
The division of labour matters. Walking may help the mind propose. It does not relieve evidence of the job of deciding. Darwin’s habit looks scientifically plausible because it alternated attention rather than rejecting it: concentrated work supplied the material, the path allowed new combinations, and the study waited for whatever survived the return indoors.
