Black Flag have announced a new line-up, teasing their first new music in 12 years.
The hardcore punk band – led by guitarist and sole original member Greg Ginn – announced on social media earlier today (April 25) that Ginn has assembled a new iteration of the band. Its most popular line-up, which featured Henry Rollins on vocals, broke up in 1987.
In 2013, Black Flag re-emerged with Ginn at the helm alongside early-day vocalist Ron Reyes. They recorded and released ‘What The…’ before Reyes was fired onstage at an Australian concert by skateboarder Mike Vallely, who then replaced Reyes on vocal duties for the remainder of 2014 and their subsequent 2019 reunion. Vallely performed his last show with Black Flag earlier this year in January.
The same year, Ginn sued Rollins and his ex-bandmates over copyright infringement – it was later tossed out of court.
“We’re turning the page,” the band’s Instagram post read. “BLACK FLAG is entering a new era”, announcing Max Zanelly on vocals, David Rodriguez on bass, and Bryce Weston on drums. Stereogum noted that all three members are relatively unknown, with Zanelly “a total mystery”.
The post also teased the band’s first new music since ‘What The….’, writing that the band’s new members are in the studio with Ginn “writing, jamming, and bringing fresh energy”.
“Live shows are coming,” they wrote. “New music is coming.”
The Rollins line-up of Black Flag released six albums from 1981 to 1985. After their breakup, the vocalist formed the 2.13.61 record label and publishing company, along with the Rollins Band, who have toured under various line-ups from 1987.
Last October, upon the release of his latest book, Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 4 – Lessons In Possession and Confessions of Obsession, Rollins explained why he remains retired in music.
“I have not thought lyrically since about the year 2000, 2001,” he said. “I’m smart enough to not come back for the encore. Hey, you missed me? I never asked that question. I just leave … I don’t quiet quit. I don’t fade. I just split after every obligation has been met.”
