HBO’s Harry Potter remake could potentially solve a 20-year-old book mystery, but it would likely be better off avoiding it entirely. One of the major benefits of this upcoming TV series is that its longer format should allow for far more book details to finally be brought to the screen. As much as we love the Harry Potter movies, they left out far too much nuance. At times, it even became necessary for the films to cut major plotlines. However, HBO’s Harry Potter TV show should have plenty of time to capture everything. In fact, we may even get more than the books previously outlined.
It’s highly beneficial that the Harry Potter remake is being made so long after the books concluded. The writers have the full picture to work with, which is something that Rowling didn’t even necessarily have when she wrote her earlier books. With a fully fleshed-out story, HBO can further expand on important details and solve some of the biggest mysteries of the overarching series. This is an exciting prospect, but there’s one unanswered Harry Potter detail that may be too dark to bring to the screen.
Harry Potter’s Movies & Books Have Never Revealed The Final Step To Making A Horcrux
It’s Harry Potter’s Best-Kept Secret
Horcruxes were a significant topic in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and their existence played a crucial role in the overall ending of the Harry Potter series. Still, all these years later, these Dark objects are still a topic of significant mystery. We know from Half-Blood Prince that the act of murder causes rips in the soul, and that a witch or wizard can take advantage of this by placing the severed fraction into some sort of item for safekeeping. So long as that piece of soul exists, that person’s central soul cannot pass into the afterlife, even if their body is destroyed.
Voldemort determined that if he split his soul into seven pieces and created six Horcruxes, he would be magically protected—immortal. His plan didn’t quite work out (he unknowingly split his soul into eight pieces, throwing off the magical balance), but he was successful in creating Horcruxes. What we don’t know is all the steps that were necessary to do this. A wizard must commit murder and then use a spell to separate the fragment of the soul from their body. However, a third “horrific act” is necessary to finalize a Horcrux. What that act is, Rowling has stated she will never reveal.
Harry Potter’s TV Remake Would Be Better Off Leaving The Final Horcrux Step A Mystery
It’d Be Better To Leave This Topic Alone
Rowling has discussed many unanswered Harry Potter questions over the years, but she has never followed through with an answer regarding the final step to creating a Horcrux. All that she has been willing to say is that she told her publisher what the step was, and that it actually made them ill. Naturally, this only piqued fans’ interest further. However, the author of the Harry Potter series has said on several occasions that she will never reveal what this “horrific act” is. This leaves HBO’s Harry Potter remake with a couple of choices.

HBO’s Harry Potter TV series has the chance to fix mistakes made by the film franchise, yet one big oversight won’t be redone for another ten years.
The writers could attempt to change Rowling’s mind, or they could come up with their own answer. Neither option is ideal, however, whatever this “horrific act” is, it likely can’t be included in a TV series meant for general audiences. Harry Potter is still, technically, a children’s story, so any darker truths have to live in the background. Alternatively, if the writers for the Harry Potter TV series came up with a more palatable answer, it would tarnish the 20-year-old mystery itself. Overall, we can likely confirm that the new series won’t provide any sort of answer in this regard.
There’s Another Big Voldemort Mystery That J.K. Rowling Will Never Answer (& HBO’s Remake Can’t Touch)
Some Of Voldemort’s Deeds Are Just Too Dark
Though the final step to making a Horcrux will likely not be addressed by HBO’s Harry Potter remake, we can still hope for a variety of other answers. Character backstories are sure to be explored further, and I would almost guarantee that we will see more of how Voldemort spent his time as a wandering spirit in Albania. This way, we could see in more detail how Peter Pettigrew found his master, as well as how he brought him Bertha Jorkins. However, there’s another aspect to this story that HBO’s remake will have to leave out.
Precisely how they crafted this body is another thing that Rowling said was simply too upsetting to include or reveal. Once again, this only made us more curious.
During this plotline in the Harry Potter books, it’s revealed that Pettigrew helped Voldemort create the disturbing infant-like body that he used until his grand resurrection at the end of Goblet of Fire. However, precisely how they crafted this body is another thing that Rowling said was simply too upsetting to include or reveal. Once again, this only made us more curious. Perhaps HBO’s Harry Potter remake can drop more hints that adult audiences could pick up on. However, as far as a full reveal, we shouldn’t hold our breaths.
