One of The Witcher’s biggest stars has revealed that she managed to push through some commitments that the Netflix series will continue to honor major storylines from the books which inspired it. Ciri actor Freya Allan has already ensured that season 4 of the show has maintained elements of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels which would otherwise have been scrapped.
While The Witcher season 4 did make substantial changes to Ciri’s character arc, Allan has explained that she insisted certain lines of dialogue and plot elements from Sapkowski’s books Baptism of Fire and The Tower of the Swallow be carried over unchanged. In this sense, she’s continued the tradition begun by The Witcher’s former lead actor, Henry Cavill.
During the first three seasons of the series, Cavill likewise pushed for changes to the script, so that it was more faithful to the novels which gave rise to it. Freya Allan’s efforts to keep aspects of the books in the TV show should also have an impact on The Witcher season 5, which has already been shot and is now in post-production.
Freya Allan Ensured The Witcher Kept Certain Book Elements In Season 4
Despite the backlash it’s justifiably received from many viewers, The Witcher season 4 has delivered for fans of the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski in ways that previous seasons of the show haven’t. It turns out that Freya Allan is a major reason for the season sticking to important aspects of the novels it’s based on.
As Allan told the NME in a recent interview, “I really want to give fans what they want.” Her wishes were granted for a key moment in The Witcher season 4’s finale, in which Ciri’s attempt to save the Rats from Bonhart fails. Instead, she’s captured by Bonhart, leaving her in a perilous position at the end of the season.
Despite this disheartening climax to the finale episode, the actor playing Ciri is pleased that Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher remained faithful to the books in this respect. “It’s such a pivotal part of Ciri’s journey. Unfortunately, she just doesn’t seem to get a break,” Allan explained. “I’m glad they stuck to the books for that.”
In her efforts to have The Witcher stick as closely to Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels as possible, Freya Allan is following in the footsteps of the actor who formerly fronted The Witcher as a screen franchise. Henry Cavill is famously an avid reader of the books which inspired his most famous role, and also pushed for Netflix’s adaptation to be as faithful as possible.
Prior to the release of The Witcher season 2 on the streaming platform, Cavill gave an interview to PhilStar Global in which he went into detail about the demands he made for book accuracy. “The things that I pushed for [were] not necessarily just more dialogue,” he said. “It was bringing a more book-accurate Geralt to the screen.”
It seems that Freya Allan had the same approach in insisting that season 4 of the show also adhered to the books it draws from. What’s more, Allan has revealed that she almost quit The Witcher upon hearing about Cavill’s departure, given the extent to which her experience of the series was bound up with working alongside him.
Luckily for those who want Netflix to see the show through to its conclusion, Allan eventually decided to stick around, and has completed her journey as Ciri. The Witcher’s penultimate season might not be to most people’s liking, but while Freya Allan is still in the series, there’s still hope that season 5 can pull it out of the bag.
