LeBron James, the NBA’s only billionaire, is headed to Philadelphia

LeBron James broke the news himself: the only NBA player currently worth $1 billion has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. The deal is what’s known as the “veteran’s minimum” for any player with 10 years or more of service — worth roughly and $8 million over two seasons, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, citing confirmation from James’ agent Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports Group.

It’s a sharp turn from his last contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he made $52.6 million last season as part of a two-year, $104 million extension signed in 2024. The move to Philadelphia’s minimum represents a cut of roughly $48 million, or more than 90% of his prior salary.

League mechanics made the number close to unavoidable. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and newly acquired Jaylen Brown already consuming the bulk of Philadelphia’s cap sheet, the Sixers had nothing left to offer beyond a minimum-salary slot — even after having traded for Brown from the rival Boston Celtics. James, one of the very greatest players in league history, has a history of earning maximum contracts wherever he’s played — along with a series of franchise movements, from his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat and back again, before his stint in Hollywood. James’ free agency was among the longest in league history, but he ultimately didn’t break his own record, from 2016.

James became the NBA’s first sitting billionaire in 2022, a status built less on his playing salary than on a business portfolio that includes a lifetime Nike deal, ownership stakes in Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool FC, and ventures such as SpringHill Company and Blaze Pizza. Forbes now estimates his net worth near $1.4 billion.

James made the logic explicit in his own announcement on X: “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.” James is often compared to Michael Jordan as the league’s greatest ever player, with Jordan winning in all six of his NBA Finals appearances, while James has won four titles over a whopping 10 Finals appearances, including a run of eight straight seasons when he was a finalist.

Stars taking below-market deals late in their careers isn’t new — Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki all did the same in their final seasons. But none did it from billionaire status while still a star-caliber performer. Rival executives have pointed to the arrangement as functioning like a super-max discount: it lets a title contender build a stronger roster around James without the cap consequences a max contract would otherwise trigger, which is part of why Philadelphia remained a realistic landing spot, even with limited cap room, after the Brown trade. (That trade was itself a stunning development, as Brown was only a season removed from winning an NBA Finals MVP with Philadelphia’s archrival Boston Celtics.)

The NBA’s average player salary for 2025-26 sits at roughly $13.8 million — meaning James will earn well under half the league average despite being arguably its most decorated active player. A max contract for someone with his tenure would have started closer to $54 million this season, putting his actual deal at roughly 7 cents on the dollar relative to what the collective bargaining agreement would otherwise have entitled him to command.

The financial optics echo a pattern Fortune has tracked around James for years: teams and cities have historically seen outsized economic paybacks whenever he signs, from a 115% jump in the Cavaliers’ valuation during his first Cleveland stint to the more than $500 million in revenue he brought the Lakers. Philadelphia is betting the same math applies here, even at minimum-contract prices.

The signing also caught prediction markets flat-footed. As recently as Tuesday, a Miami Heat social media mishap had scrambled the odds, briefly pushing Miami to a coin-flip favorite on Polymarket and helping drive combined trading on James’s next team past $245 million across Kalshi and Polymarket — at one point the third-largest market in Kalshi’s history. None of that volume, in the end, was on Philadelphia.

Just before James made the announcement Friday morning, users of Kalshi gave Philadelphia an 8.7% chance of being James’ next home. The prediction, which carried a volume of over $227 million just 20 minutes after James’ tweet, gave Miami at 48.8% odds. After James’ tweet, Philadelphia saw over a 90-point surge and landed at 99%. Miami and Golden State, the two next-closest contenders, have both cratered to under 1%.

James closed his own announcement by thanking each of his prior stops: “Thank you LA. Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always home!”

On a personal note, James added that “the last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out.”

For this story, Fortune used generative AI to help with an initial draft. An editor verified the accuracy of the information before publishing.
