Why I Stopped Weighing Myself as a Nutrition Consultant

If you’ve ever stepped on the scale first thing in the morning and let the number decide how you feel about yourself, what kind of exercise you’re going to suffer through that day, or whether or not you deserve pasta at dinner, you’re not alone. In fact, most of the women I work with have spent years (if not decades) in this vicious cycle. I was one of them, too. But after nearly a decade of coaching women, I can tell you that the scale is one of the least useful tools we have for measuring progress. Part personal story, part nutritionist playbook, this is what I learned when I stopped weighing myself—and what I track instead.

My Daily Scale Habit

I was a daily weigher for years (I cringe writing that). Without fail, it was one of the first things I’d do every morning. And the number blinking back at me set the tone for my entire day. If it was down, I felt in control. If it was up—even by half a pound—I’d mentally replay everything I ate the day before and carry a low-grade cloud of anxiety into my morning. The irony? As a nutrition consultant, I knew that weight fluctuates by 2-5 pounds on any given day based on hydration, sodium, hormones, and what you ate for dinner. I told my clients this constantly. But knowing something and living it are two very different things.

The Morning I Stopped

This is a bit anticlimactic, but the battery on my scale died. Coincidentally, we were leaving on a family trip the next day, so replacing it wasn’t exactly top of mind. A week and a half had passed, and by the time we got home, I realized something had shifted. I wasn’t bracing for a number every morning. I wasn’t mentally replaying what I ate the night before. I wasn’t negotiating with myself about whether I’d earned a rest day. And I certainly wasn’t letting a 3-digit number decide if I was going to have a snack or not. The freedom I felt was wild, and I wasn’t about to give it back (at least not entirely).

Why the Scale Measures

For context, a scale measures the gravitational pull of your body mass at one moment in time. That’s it. Unless you use an at-home body composition scale, it can’t distinguish between muscle and fat. It can’t tell you whether your hormones are regulated or that you just had the best workout of your life. It doesn’t tell you about your bone density or BMR (basal metabolic rate).

During my own body recomposition—when I gained 9 pounds of muscle over the course of 15 months—the scale would have told a confusing story. I gained weight, technically. But I lost body fat, dropped a jean size, and my bloodwork improved across the board. If the scale had been my only feedback loop, I would have thought I was moving further away from my goal.

My Weight Isn’t a Judgment Call

Full transparency, I think the “ditch the scale forever” messaging can feel just as prescriptive as the “weigh yourself daily” one. I still use a scale. I check in once or twice a month to track trends in muscle gain because one of my 2026 goals is to gain even more muscle! But I don’t do it first thing in the morning, and I don’t do it when I’m feeling emotionally wobbly (read: during my luteal phase). The relationship I have with the scale now is the same one I have with my bloodwork through Function Health. It’s information, not a judgment call.

Energy Is My First Metric

So, what do I track instead? First and foremost, energy. Can I get through the afternoon without needing sugar or caffeine to take the edge off? Am I waking up feeling rested or am I dragging from the moment my alarm goes off? Do I have enough in the tank to play whiffle ball in the backyard or take my boys to the pool and still feel like a functioning human by bedtime? Energy is one of the first things that improves when you’re eating enough and one of the first things that tanks when you’re not. I pay more attention to this than any number on a device.

Sleep as an Indicator

Second, am I falling asleep with relative ease? Staying asleep through the night (barring a toddler situation)? Waking up before my alarm? Sleep is downstream of almost everything: blood sugar, stress, hormones, nutrition. When my sleep is solid, I know the rest of the picture is usually in good shape too. When it’s not, something needs attention, and no amount of scale data is going to tell me what.

Strength Is the Most Honest Marker

Beyond energy and sleep, this is the one that changed my perspective more than anything. Am I progressing in my lifts? Can I pick up my toddler without throwing out my back? I started strength training between my pregnancies, and watching what my body could do rather than obsessing over what it weighed was the shift that rewired my entire approach to movement. Strength is the most honest measure of physical progress I’ve found, and it doesn’t have a number attached to it (not counting the weight on the barbell!).

Mood and Patience Count

Inevitably, when you’re nourished and rested, your baseline mood shifts. You’re less reactive. Your fuse is longer. You’re more creative/focused on your work. You can make it through your kid’s bedtime routines without mentally counting the minutes until they’re asleep. This list goes on and on. Personally, when my blood sugar is all over the place, my patience is the first thing to go. That’s not a vanity metric. That’s a quality-of-life metric, and it matters more than whatever the scale says.

A Kinder Way Into Fall

Late summer carries a specific pull—the urge to reset and re-find our footing before fall routines kick in. That impulse isn’t bad. But the tools we reach for matter. If the first thing you do is step on the scale and let the number decide whether you’re starting from a good place or a bad one, you’ve already set yourself up to feel behind. What if you started with how you feel instead? Pay attention to your energy, your sleep, your patience, and the way your body moves. They’ll tell you practically everything you need to know. Yes, the scale offers a number. But remember: a number without context is just noise.
