While most people probably think of him as a “Law & Order: SVU” original character, the beloved sardonic Detective Munch, played by Richard Belzer, was actually a guest star that came from a different cop drama. John Munch’s character started out on “Homicide: Life on the Street,” another NBC cop series that aired from 1993 to 1999. Munch appeared in a series of crossover episodes between “Law & Order” and “Homicide: Life on the Street” before finally making the metaphorical move from Baltimore to NYC and beginning his now-famous role on “Law & Order: SVU.”
The original crossover episode was split into two parts across the TV shows. Part one was “Law & Order” Season 6, Episode 13 and part two was “Homicide: Life on the Street” Season 4, Episode 12. The case involved a racist terrorist attack in NYC, with the investigation leading the detectives to Baltimore, where the perpetrator had previously carried out a church attack.
Sadly, Richard Belzer died in 2023, but his impact on everyone in the “Law & Order” universe is everlasting. Series creator Dick Wolf explained how much he loved Belzer and the character of Munch in a statement after his death. “I first worked with Richard on the Law & Order/Homicide crossover and loved the character so much, I told Tom (Fontana) that I wanted to make him one of the original characters on SVU,” said Wolf (via People). “The rest is history. Richard brought humor and joy into all our lives, was the consummate professional, and we will all miss him very much.”
Richard Belzer would only join Law & Order: SVU if Dean Winters came with him
According to Dean Winters, one of the conditions Richard Belzer had for starring in “Law & Order: SVU” as Munch was that he needed to have Winters play his partner, Detective Brian Cassidy. Winters explained how it happened in a 2012 interview with Celebs.
“I met Richard doing Homicide back in ’94, and when I came on the show initially 13 years ago, Richard Belzer told Dick Wolf that he would play Munch if I was his partner,” said Winters. “So that’s how I got on the show, you know. He kind of strong-armed Dick Wolf, if anybody can really strong-arm Dick.” Unfortunately, the Munch-Cassidy detective duo was short-lived and only lasted one season due to Winters’ contractual issues with his role as Ryan O’Reily on the HBO series “Oz.”
Belzer would get a new partner in the form of Detective Odafin Tutuola (played by Ice-T), and their dynamic would be just as entertaining as that of Munch and Cassidy. Additionally, Winters would return as Brian Cassidy in later seasons of “Law & Order: SVU.”
