Law & Order fans will soon get to experience another international division of the popular franchise – Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.
The series premiered in Canada on Citytv in February 2024, but it will premiere on Wednesday, September 24 at 8/7c on The CW.
Toronto is the ideal location, as the series can feature authentic Canadian crimes, distinct locations, and invite local actors to guest star.
With some of the other Law & Order shows nearing the end of their lives, we’re excited for this new spin-off and to witness different cases and a new team.
What Sets Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent Apart From Other L & O Universes?
Canadian procedurals differ from US ones. They are often lighter-hearted and harder to acquire by more well-known stations.
I’ve enjoyed several of them, with Motive and Private Eyes being my favorites, so I understand the victory that Canada got its own adaptation of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
The franchise already has a built-in fanbase, but Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent looks authentic because it’s filmed locally.
They’re not trying to film somewhere else and make it look Canadian. That’s part of the charm you’ll see, with distinct places like Chinatown, Lake Ontario, and even City Hall.
Throughout Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, viewers will see the differences between the Canadian judicial system and the US judicial system.
These cases appear fresh and interesting, combining the best of the early years of the Law & Order franchise.
They’re not as intense as Law & Order: SVU has become, and may showcase the killer or criminal more than the victim.
Showrunner Tassie Cameron also headed Canadian procedurals Flashpoint and Rookie Blue, as well as wrote episodes for Private Eyes. She’s well-versed in this world, and we can’t wait!
Who Is Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’s Team?
We’re excited to see the team in action.
Detectives Groff and Bateman already interact like they are old friends from the promos, and that’s what sells these procedurals.
Aden Young plays Det. Sgt. Henry Graff — a rugged, gruff detective who spouts off facts and theories and often needs his female partner to explain them.
He’s joined by Det. Sgt. Frankie Bateman (Kathleen Munroe), who generally relates to the victims and suspects better.
We can tell that Inspector Vivienne Holness (Karen Robinson) does not take any nonsense from anyone, and she’ll be entertaining to watch when she debates with Det. Graff.
Deputy Crown Attorney Theo Forrester (K.C. Collins) rounds out the main cast. We’re unsure how much time each episode will spend prosecuting cases, but we’d like to see more of him.
He seems knowledgeable and a good fit with the team.
Like most Law & Order franchises, most episodes are weekly cases and don’t allow for much serialized drama; hopefully, we’ll learn more about the main characters’ lives, though.
Compelling Cases and High Stakes
Viewers will recognize “ripped from the headlines” cases, only they’re all Canadian-based.
Showrunner Tassie Cameron wrote the pilot, and many will recognize the case from the promo and synopsis.
It follows a crypto investor who disappears off the side of his private yacht after a VIP client’s private party.
Detective Sergeant Henry Graff and Detective Frankie Bateman investigate whether it’s a “gone girl” situation, where he faked his death and disappeared with the money, or someone murdered him.
This is a great case to open with because most people are familiar with the real-life case it’s based on, and it will include many twists and turns, from the initial crime to the end, to keep us guessing.
While it could be a revenge murder, the victim could have faked his death, eager to start over elsewhere. It depends on whether he or his business colleagues were colder-hearted.
I’m excited to delve into the psychological reasoning behind these criminals and the reasons they committed their crimes, rather than merely identifying the perpetrators.
This is one of the most massive series that The CW has ever acquired.
Since they have already acquired Season 2, I’m hoping it’ll do well for them on Wednesday nights with Wild Cards.
