Jury Finds Duane “Keffe D” Davis Guilty of Arranging Tupac’s Murder

A Las Vegas jury found 63-year-old Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder, a killing that has lingered in the annals of rap history and American crime.

Monday, the jury declared Davis guilty of first-degree murder. Sentencing will happen at a later time. Davis could face life in prison.

The jury came to its decision a couple hours after hearing closing arguments from prosecutors and defense attorneys with Marc DiGiacomo and Binu Palal of the Clark County, Nevada district attorney’s office painting a picture of Davis as a gang leader and the shot caller who called for the rapper to be hunted down while putting a gun in the hand of the triggerman.

“(Davis) acquired firearms, got his group together, and went hunting for Mr. Shakur,” Palal told jurors, as reported by Billboard.

Davis’ defense attorney, Michael Sanft, depicted his client’s own words about being with the armed posse that tracked down Shakur as spelled out in a 2019 memoir as the fictionalization of a man seeking money and fame from the infamous shooting. A ghost-writer made up implicating parts of the memoir, Sanft told jurors.

Sanft argued before the jury box that Davis liked to “bullshit” and said, “What you’re going to find is that the state cannot prove to you beyond a reasonable doubt the claim that Keffe had anything to do with a first-degree murder,” per Billboard.

Shakur was gunned down 30 years ago on September 7th, 1996 after he and Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight beat up Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, in the MGM Grand Hotel lobby following a Mike Tyson boxing match. Earlier in the year, Anderson had tried to steal a Death Row medallion from an associated of Knight, starting a beef that resulted in the altercation at the MGM Grand. Davis got at least three others together and tracked down Knight and Shakur, according to prosecutors. The person who fired the gun into Knight’s SUV that ultimately killed Shakur has gone unnamed by Davis for decades. After being hospitalized, Shakur died on September 13th at 25 years old.

In 2019, Davis, a gang leader of a Los Angeles band of Crips in the 1990s, released a memoir, admitting in its pages to being in the car that pulled up beside Knight and Shakur and handing someone a gun in the backseat where the shots were fired that killed the hip-hop legend. At the trial, Davis walked back his statements through his attorney.

Clark County prosecutors had long suspected Davis as the orchestrator of the murder, but didn’t have enough evidence to charge him until after the memoir’s release and the former gang leader’s media appearances, at which he talked about the shooting. In 2023, prosecutors obtained a grand jury indictment against Davis, charging him with murder with a deadly weapon. Under Nevada law, someone alleged to have arranged a killing can be charged as the killer.

The trial began in mid-August and lasted two weeks.

In 2025, Davis was sentenced in a completely separate incident after being found guilty of having a role in a jail fight and was sentenced to 16 to 40 months in prison. He was given parole earlier this year, according to prison records.
