What Living In London Taught Me About Slowing Down

I’ve heard people say that if a city calls to you, there’s a part of your story waiting to unfold there. For me, that city has always been London. For years, I felt an undeniable pull toward the UK, and this spring, I finally answered it by spending 12 weeks studying at one of London’s most prestigious drama schools. It was a dream I’d carried for years, and I returned home with so much more than I expected. Alongside the acting lessons and unforgettable memories was something I never saw coming: a completely different relationship with time.

You wouldn’t expect one of the world’s busiest cities to teach you how to slow down. But amid London’s constant movement, I noticed a rhythm to daily life that was quietly profound. The small rituals people embraced—and that I slowly adopted myself—left me feeling more grounded, present, and connected to each day. The best part? You don’t have to move abroad to experience them. These are the London-inspired rituals I’m bringing home with me, and the ones I hope I’ll never leave behind.

Everyday Gatherings

Pub and cafe culture in Europe hits different than it does in the States. There are always people gathered outside, pints in hand or sipping espresso. Sure, we have happy hour, but there’s something so magical about seeing people gathered, chatting and having a great time on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. There’s no need to wait until Friday!

There’s also no need to stay out super late to throw your entire week off—going out for a pint can truly mean just that. One drink, one hour, then you go on your way. I’m inspired to have more casual gatherings in the middle of the week. Connecting with neighbors and friends doesn’t have to wait until the weekend.

Tea As Ritual

The Brits will tell you: if you want to slow down, put the kettle on. Tea isn’t just a drink in the UK—it’s woven into daily life. Everyone has a kettle, and every common area at my drama school had one ready to go. While life didn’t necessarily stop at 3 p.m. for tea each day, I found myself reaching for a cup far more often than coffee. There was something comforting about the ritual itself: waiting for the water to boil, letting the tea steep for a few quiet minutes, and easing into the day instead of rushing through it.

I also had the chance to experience two traditional afternoon teas while living in London—one at the Wallace Collection and another at Raffles London at The OWO. Both were unforgettable, not just because of the beautiful settings, but because they reminded me that sharing a pot of tea is really an excuse to linger. It was such a treat to slow down, sip tea, and enjoy my friends’ company.

That ritual is one I’m bringing home with me. Whether it’s tea, coffee, matcha, or even a Diet Coke, I’ve started treating my daily drink as a reason to pause instead of something to consume while multitasking. It’s a small shift, but it’s become one of the simplest ways I bring a little more presence into my day.

Long Walks As A Reset

Some of my favorite moments in London were the long solo walks that became a chance to mentally pause. Whether I was walking to school, grabbing a coffee at lunch, or heading home after a West End show, I was easily clocking 12,000 steps a day simply by choosing to walk instead of hopping on the Tube or a bus.

Those walks brought clarity to decisions I needed to make, and creative ideas seemed to find me at every turn. Simply being present as I wandered the streets of London expanded my mind in ways I hadn’t expected. If you don’t already take walks, lace up your shoes and get out there. And even if you’re already tracking your daily steps, try a new route and see what you discover.

Midweek Events

In addition to midweek pub dates, I made it a Wednesday evening ritual to go to the theatre. To my surprise, every show I saw on a Wednesday was packed. Sure, there were probably plenty of tourists, but many of the productions were at smaller theatres that don’t typically draw tourist crowds. The seats were still full, and it was such a joy to see so many people out and about in the middle of the week. Every Wednesday show left me feeling inspired for the rest of the week.

It was another lesson in not waiting for the weekend. Life can happen any day of the week. London offers so many things to see and do, and it inspired me to explore my own city on weeknights instead of saving everything for Saturday and Sunday. Who says midweek theatre dates have to stop stateside? If London taught me anything, it’s that slowing down isn’t always about doing less—it can also come from making more room for the things that truly fill you up.

Adopt A Work-To-Live Mindset

During my time in London, I couldn’t help but notice a different relationship with work. In America, it often feels like we’ve embraced a live-to-work mindset. We take pride in working hard, staying late, and squeezing in one more project after hours. But in the UK? It seems like their mindset is a bit different. Instead of living to work, they’re working to live.

Prioritizing breaks, seeing friends, and spending time outdoors didn’t feel like luxuries. They felt like a normal part of life. And while not everyone signed off exactly at 5 p.m., there was a clear respect for the end of the workday that I found refreshing. Americans are incredibly entrepreneurial, and I genuinely admire our drive to build businesses, chase big dreams, and create opportunities. But my time abroad reminded me that ambition and rest don’t have to compete.

As I settle back into life stateside, that’s the balance I’m hoping to hold onto: continuing to pursue the goals that matter most to me while making just as much room for slow mornings, long walks, time with friends, and moments of rest. Maybe that’s the greatest lesson London gave me—not how to do less, but how to make space for a life that feels full in every sense of the word. Cheers!
