5 Fall Denim Trends Actually Worth Wearing This Season

Even though it’s been a long time since I’ve been in school, the second August rolls around, my mind goes straight to back-to-school shopping. There’s something about this time of year that makes me want to reset my closet, reevaluate my capsule wardrobe, and invest in a few key pieces for the season ahead. One of my favorite fall rituals is shifting from summer’s linen and lightweight fabrics back into denim—and this year’s fall denim trends are giving us plenty of ways to make that transition feel fresh without reinventing our wardrobes entirely.

The best part? You don’t need to try them all. Jeans are such a personal piece of clothing that there’s no one silhouette that works for everyone. Between Hailey Bieber’s viral Gap jeans, the Still Here Sport Jean that took over my feed last year, and the short-lived return of the skinny jean, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up. So instead, this fall, I’m looking at five denim trends that feel fresh but still wearable—and choosing the ones that actually make sense for my closet.

How to Choose the Right Pair

Before buying into any of this season’s fall denim trends, start with what already works for you. Do you feel best in a low, mid, or high rise? What silhouette feels most flattering? And, perhaps most importantly, what shoes do you actually wear? A jean that works perfectly with a heel may be too long for your favorite flats, so factor your go-to footwear into your inseam decision.

And don’t be afraid to tailor your denim. I’d much rather buy the pair that fits perfectly through the waist and hips and have the length adjusted than compromise on the overall fit. You can also cut or cuff a pair yourself; sometimes the easiest way to make a jean feel new is simply changing the hem.

The Best Fall Denim Trends Are the One You’ll Actually Wear

The point of fall denim trends isn’t to convince you that everything in your closet is suddenly outdated. Instead, use them as inspiration—a silhouette, wash, or styling trick that might make the clothes you already own feel new again. To make sure these recommendations are worth your time (and closet space), every pair featured here is either a personal tried-and-true favorite or came directly from a poll I ran on Instagram, asking readers to share the single best pair of jeans they own.

Whether that means investing in a dark wash, trying a barrel leg, or simply cuffing your favorite pair, here are five fall denim trends actually worth wearing.

1. The Dark-Wash Denim

After years of light, vintage-inspired washes dominating our closets, dark denim feels fresh again. It’s polished, a little dressier, and gives jeans nearly the same elevated feeling as trousers. Try a dark denim-on-denim look, or dress it up with a feminine top and a kitten heel. For something more casual, you can’t go wrong with a crisp white tee.

2. The Relaxed Straight-Leg Jean

The relaxed straight-leg jean is the everyday workhorse of fall denim. This season, we’re moving away from ultra-baggy silhouettes and toward a more tailored, ’90s-inspired shape—the kind that always seems to find its way back into rotation. It’s slim enough to pair with a chunky sweater, yet relaxed enough to feel effortless with a plain white tee. And when it comes to shoes, almost anything goes: flip-flops, sneakers, loafers, boots, heels, all fair game.

3. The Barrel-Leg Jean

Barrel-leg jeans have officially graduated from fleeting trend to legitimate wardrobe staple. They’re ideal for anyone who loves the comfort of a baggy jean but wants a bit more shape and personality. Keep the rest of your outfit streamlined—a fitted tee or tucked-in blouse—so the curved silhouette can do the talking. If you’re on the shorter side, opt for a less dramatic barrel to keep proportions balanced.

4. The Cuffed Jean

The easiest fall denim trend might be the one that doesn’t require shopping at all. Take your longest pair of straight- or wide-leg jeans and roll them up. A single small cuff is subtle; a cuff of up to five inches can completely transform an old pair. It’s practical, too—no one wants their jeans dragging on the sidewalk—and gives your shoes a moment to shine. Try it with loafers, ballet flats, sneakers, or a kitten heel.

5. The Ecru Jean

Consider this your permission slip to ignore the “no white after Labor Day” rule. Ecru denim reads more autumnal than stark white, especially paired with the season’s richer palette—olive green, chocolate brown, burnt orange. Look for a creamy, warm white that feels soft rather than overly beige. Like dark denim, it has an elevated quality that dresses up easily for dinner or down for everyday wear.
