Resident Evil 5 Remake Needs To Keep This Iconic Scene, Fans Agree

If Resident Evil 5 is the next game Capcom wants to remake, fans say, it has to include one iconic scene to be considered the definitive version. There have been rumblings of an RE5 remake for years, and, if Capcom is proceeding chronologically through the series, 5 would naturally be its next target after the Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023.

But some fans are already very exacting about what should and shouldn’t be included in the remake, incluing X (formerly Twitter)’s Synth Potato. Having recently completed a replay of Resident Evil 5, they expressed hope that a scene in which protagonist Chris Redfield repeatedly punches a boulder out of his way would be included in the remake.

Will Resident Evil 5 Get A Remake?

Capcom could go either way

Rumors of a Resident Evil 5 remake have been circulating for years. Besides the fact that Capcom has already been remaking its way through the rest of the series, and RE5 is the next mainline game up at bat, there have been a few signs that a remake could be imminent.

Perhaps most compellingly, the title received an ESRB rating last month, suggesting that it’s already in the works. More recently, Resident Evil Requiem briefly featured a nod to Umbrella Corp founder Oswell E. Spencer, who makes a rare onscreen appearance in RE5. Many have taken this to mean that Capcom is setting up to further develop his character in a remake.

However, some suggest that Capcom is working on an entirely different remake: one of the beloved spinoff Code: Veronica. Leakers have hinted that an RE5 remake isn’t even in the works yet, with Code: Veronica set to come out sometime next year and maybe, just maybe, another mainline remake to follow.

Resi 5’s Boulder Scene Is “Peak Fiction”

Why it belongs in the remake

Sheva with a happy expression.

Resident Evil 5‘s boulder scene is absolutely ridiculous, but it’s also emblematic of the franchise’s awkward teenage years. After the formerly levelheaded horror protagonist Leon Kennedy turned into a one-man one-liner machine in the more action-oriented Resident Evil 4, the franchise took a sharp left turn, becoming a series of third-person shooters until Resident Evil 7 set it back on the horror track.

It wasn’t a totally unwelcome development: as much as Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 feel incongruous with the earlier entries in the franchise, there are some kernels of brilliance in there. One of its most irresistible charms is the exact sort of over-the-top, campy silliness that led to Chris Redfield frantically punching a boulder.

Lots of modern remakes have done away with the silliness of their source material, though, in favor of a more self-serious tone. That’s never been the case with the REmakes, though. Even though the newer games, like Biohazard, Village, and Requiem, have trended toward the horror side of the franchise, the remakes retain their tongue-in-cheek tone.

The Resident Evil remakes have been so successful, in part because they manage to capture the spirit of the games they’re emulating. Almost all of Leon’s ridiculous one-liners are ported right over into RE4make, including the iconic “Where’s everyone going? Bingo?”

As one reply to the original Tweet points out, Resident Evil Village even directly references Chris’ penchant for punching boulders; Capcom isn’t hiding With things like Requiem‘s split-protagonist gameplay, Capcom has proven that it has no intention of burying the series’ sense of humor; if anything, it’s celebrating everything that Resident Evil is.

For that reason, the boy-meets-boulder scene doesn’t just deserve to appear in any future attempt at a Resident Evil 5 remake — frankly, I’d be shocked and offended if it didn’t.
