In the latest issue of Spider-Man 2099: Exodus, it’s revealed that Loki was responsible for creating a New Asgard that’s way cooler than the MCU’s.

Loki and Marvel Comics are showing the MCU what New Asgard should be. Featured in the latest issue of Spider-Man 2099: Exodus, Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man is assembling allies in the future to help him fight the original Green Goblin and his Cabal of villains. As such, Spider-Man learns about Loki and his status in the year 2099, a surviving god who created a brand new version of Asgard that’s far more dynamic than the one seen on-screen.
In the first issue of Spider-Man 2099: Exodus from Steve Orlando and Marco Castiello, the body of a Celestial fell to Earth which created a garden of immense power ripe for the taking. Naturally, Norman Osborn wants to take the power for himself with Spider-Man naturally wanting to prevent that from happening. Following a meeting with the Winter Soldier of 2099, Spider-Man has now encountered a new Valkyrie who reveals what happened to Loki in this dark future.
As seen in the new Spider-Man 2099: Exodus #2, Loki 2099 was the last god of Asgard after Alchemax destroyed the realm via an artificial Ragnarok of their own design. Roaming the wastelands before finding this new Valkyrie (who defected from Alchemax), the two traveled to the Celestial Garden. Collecting Celestial cellular fluid, Loki was able to combine the powerful substance with the last of his magic to restore Asgard (sacrificing himself in the process). While Loki’s epic New Asgard didn’t bring back the original Asgardians, his magical blood combined with the Celestial cells resulted in the creation of an entirely new race in Marvel’s potential future.
In the MCU, New Asgard is simply the small town of Tønsberg, Norway where the Asgardians put down roots after the original Asgard was taken over by Hela and destroyed by Surtur in Thor: Ragnarok. It’s also been hinted that New Asgard has become a major tourist destination. By comparison, Loki’s version of New Asgard is the far more dynamic version of the two, seeing as how it redeems the God of Mischief as a hero while also introducing a whole new cross-species of god and mortal in the Marvel Universe.
At any rate, it seems Spider-Man has just stumbled onto a whole new kingdom of godlike beings who might be able to help him take down Norman Osborn in the issues to come. However, it’s confirmed that the future New Asgard is made up of outcasts and the forsaken, those like Loki who’ve been largely misjudged. Aside from the Valkyrie of 2099, there’s no telling who else might join Miguel as Spider-Man 2099 continues.
