6 X-Men Heroes Marvel Wants Fans To Forget

The X-Men’s huge cast is often treated as a strength, yet it also gives Marvel plenty of characters it can afford to leave behind. Not every mutant can sell a series, carry a major storyline, or connect with readers over decades. In such cases, these heroes may inevitably receive less attention in favor of their more popular counterparts.

Controversy could also play a key role, as certain mutants were shaped by ideas, stereotypes, or storylines that have aged poorly, making it hard to maintain consistent appearances. Marvel may prefer to avoid renewed scrutiny, especially when a character offers little commercial upside to balance the risk of placing them center stage.

Despite their intentions, there is rarely an announcement that a character has failed as a creative or commercial investment. Instead, the evidence is often a long absence or minimal development. These patterns may not explicitly prove Marvel actively wants readers to forget them, but they suggest the publisher has found little reason to promote them.

Many X-Men heroes have found themselves on the receiving end of such treatment, as it is clear they no longer fit comfortably within Marvel’s plans. Their limited prospects reflect the realities of a franchise where popularity shapes publishing decisions, and controversial legacies can lead to active attempts to keep certain characters out of the spotlight.

Bailey Hoskins

Bailey Hoskins entered Marvel’s mutant universe in X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever, a five-issue miniseries written by Max Bemis and illustrated by Michael Walsh in 2016. The story follows an ordinary teenager who expects his mutant heritage to give him a place among the X-Men, only to discover that his power makes that dream difficult to pursue.

After Bailey’s parents reveal that they are mutants, he heads to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, hoping to find people who understand him. Beast’s assessment, however, shows that while Bailey can make himself explode, the blast would kill him. Unlike his classmates, he cannot use his ability repeatedly or safely train with it.

His problems deepen when a Sentinel attack kills his parents, leaving him with no family to return to. Although he stays at the school, Bailey struggles to feel significant beside mutants whose gifts they can control and use in battle. His story treats the school’s promise of belonging with an uncomfortable dose of irony.

Bailey’s power is an intriguing twist on the usual mutant fantasy, but it doesn’t fit neatly into conventional superhero stories. The miniseries ends with him detonating himself to stop the dangerous mutant Riches, and he dies in the process. That sacrifice provides closure, leaving very little room for any further adventures.

Stacy X

Nightcrawler with Stacy X in Marvel Comics
Nightcrawler with Stacy X in Marvel Comics

When Stacy X appeared in Uncanny X-Men #399 in 2001, Marvel gave her an origin far removed from the usual tale of a teenager discovering heroic gifts. Named Miranda Leevald, she was pushed to the margins of society after her mutation altered her skin, and she survived only by working at the X-Ranch, a mutant-staffed brothel.

Stacy’s pheromones could manipulate bodily functions and trigger powerful sensations, while her scaly skin made her visibly different even among mutants. These traits offered a way to explore prejudice directed at outsiders, yet her powers and occupation were presented through a sexualized lens that left little distance between her identity and work.

After the X-Ranch was attacked by the Church of Humanity, Stacy joined the X-Men, but her membership did not last. She struggled with team expectations, tried to seduce several male teammates, and eventually clashed with Husk over Archangel. Rather than getting a sustained arc about belonging or recovery, she left amid romantic friction and continued uncertainty about her place.

Although Stacy’s mutation could support stories about bodily autonomy and the treatment of outsiders, her early characterization rarely moved beyond sexual provocation. That imbalance leaves Marvel with a character whose most recognizable traits are also the parts most likely to draw criticism. Without a clear new direction, keeping her on the sidelines may be easier than rebuilding her image.

Ink

Screenshot (3315)

Ink, whose real name is Eric Gitter, debuted in Young X-Men #1 in 2008 as a troubled teenager with a criminal record. His first appearance showed him using a biohazard tattoo on his palm to make a police officer seriously ill. He soon came under the wing of a new team that believed Cyclops had recruited them.

The supposed recruitment was not what it seemed, since the man posing as Cyclops was actually Donald Pierce, an enemy of the X-Men who wanted the young mutants to attack the former New Mutants. Ink agreed to deliver Dani Moonstar and Blindfold to Pierce, but refused to kill them. Once Pierce’s deception was exposed, Ink switched sides and fought with the other heroes.

Ink’s unusual abilities seemed to come from his tattoos, each granting a different effect. A biohazard symbol induced severe illness, while other designs provided super strength, flight, telepathy, and other abilities. It was later revealed, however, that Ink was never really a mutant himself, and that his tattoos were a product of external handiwork.

That revelation undermined Ink’s original identity and made his place in a franchise built around mutant experiences difficult to define. His initial appeal depended heavily on being an unconventional addition to the mutant community, but that distinction became a liability once the true nature of his abilities came to light.

3

Slipstream

Screenshot (3316)

Marvel introduced Slipstream in X-Treme X-Men #6 in 2001 as an Australian surfer whose life changed after his father’s death. Also known as Davis Cameron, he and his sister Heather learned that their father had secretly been Viceroy, a crime lord, and came under attack because of his criminal connections. Thankfully, the siblings were rescued by Storm and her allies.

One of those allies was Sage, a mutant X-Men operative who could awaken dormant powers in others. When Heather was captured, Sage told Davis that he carried a latent mutant ability that could help locate his sister. He agreed, gaining the ability to travel through a warp wave, a form of teleportation that could carry others.

Davis joined Storm’s team as Slipstream and briefly developed a crush on her. His time with the X-Men came to an abrupt end when Heather’s appearance changed to resemble a Shi’ar, an alien race with birdlike features. Unable to accept his sister’s transformation, he abandoned the team, displaying the same prejudice the X-Men had long fought against.

2

Petra

X-Men Deadly Genesis Art of Vulcan Sway Petra and Darwin

Petra’s first story appeared in Deadly Genesis #1 in 2005, part of a miniseries that revealed a hidden chapter in the X-Men’s history. Before Storm, Wolverine, and the other recruits joined the team, Professor X sent a separate group of young mutants to rescue the original X-Men from Krakoa, including Petra.

Her power, geomorphing, lets her reshape and control earth and stone. It first erupted during a family camping trip, causing a rockslide that killed her relatives while instinctively shielding her from harm. After mistreatment in foster care, Petra ran away and used her abilities to build a hidden rock shelter while living on the streets.

Petra’s most important act also became her last. In her final moments, she used her remaining strength to bury her teammates underground, helping Darwin and Vulcan survive. Although her sacrifice proved important to the mission’s aftermath, Petra herself remained a relatively obscure figure whose story was cut short before she could establish an independent identity.

1

Sunpyre

Sunpyre Marvel X-Men

Sunpyre, whose real name is Leyu Yoshida, debuted in Uncanny X-Men #392 in 2001 during the Eve of Destruction storyline. After Magneto captured Professor X, Jean Grey assembled a temporary team to rescue him. She expected help from Shiro Yoshida, known as Sunfire, but his previously unknown sister Leyu answered the call instead.

Like her brother, Sunpyre could absorb solar energy and release it as intense heat and plasma, using the force to fly or blast enemies. She joined Jean’s emergency team despite openly looking down on some of its recruits. Once Magneto was defeated, she returned to Japan rather than remain with the X-Men.

A later assignment with X-Corps ended in her death when Mystique, who had infiltrated the group in disguise, killed her while she was working near Abyss. Overall, she appeared only briefly, becoming known for her difficult attitude while seeming to serve only as a replacement for her much more popular brother.
