10 Best Members Of The 501st Legion, Ranked

The Star Wars franchise features to millions of clones, all of whom fought during the galactic conflict known as the Clone Wars. The animated anthology series Star Wars: The Clones Wars delves deeper into the lore of the clones, including their various battalions and legions.

By far, the most famous clone Legion is that of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, known as the 501st. The 501st Legion was known for its skill and ferocity and, eventually, for accompanying Skywalker in the Great Jedi Purge at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. This clone army was home to some of the very best troopers in the Army of the Grand Republic.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

10 Hawk

Hawk in The Clone Wars

Hawk was a clone pilot during the galactic conflict known as the Clone Wars, frequently flying missions under the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, the leader of the 501st Legion in the Grand Army of the Republic. The clone appears in five episodes throughout the Clone Wars animated anthology series.

Despite limited appearances in the Star Wars franchise, any pilot that can keep up with the frenzied plans of Anakin Skywalker deserves commendation. Hawk’s unquestioning persistence and reliability make him one of the most valuable assets within the 501st Legion.

9 Dogma

Dogma in Clone Wars

Dogma was a rookie Clone Trooper who is most known for appearing in one of the best arcs in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, depicting the Battle of Umbara. In his four-episode stint on The Clone Wars, Dogma and his clone brothers struggle under the new command of Jedi General Pong Krell, who does not seem to have their best interest at heart.

Dogma received his nickname due to his proclivity to blindly follow the orders of his superiors without thought or question. Though his trait made him a loyal soldier, it also made him quite myopic in matters requiring deeper thought. However, he would grow to see the error in his own actions, executing General Krell after learning of his betrayal.

8 Hardcase

Clone Wars' Hardcase

Hardcase was a member of the 501st Legion during the Siege of Umbara. Receiving his nickname for his tough exterior, Hardcase was known for being somewhat of a loose cannon, even being chastised by Anakin Skywalker, a general known for his untraditional battle tactics.

Though he only appears in a small number of episodes, Hardcase proves to be one of the more memorable clones from The Clone Wars series, whose distinct personality sets him apart from his thousands of identical brothers. In the end, Hardcase even proves himself a hero, sacrificing himself on Umbara so that his compatriots could continue their mission.

7 Fox

Clone Wars Commander Fox Star Wars

CT-0000/1010, also known as Sergeant Fox, was a member of the 501st during the execution of Order 66. Making his first and only appearance during Revenge of the Sith, Fox confronts Bail Organa on Coruscant and eventually participates in the killing of Jedi Padawan Zett Jukassa.

Despite a very limited amount of screentime, Fox quickly asserts himself as one of the rare clones that is able to survive close combat with a Jedi enemy. The clone sergeant is implied to have survived the events of the Great Jedi Purge and, serving under Darth Vader, likely participated in the hunting down of many other escaped Jedi.

6 Jesse

Jesse in Star Wars The Clone Wars

Jesse, also known as CT-5597, was a longstanding member of the 501st Legion during the Clone Wars. An ARC Trooper and a lieutenant in the Grand Army of the Republic, Jesse proved to be one of the most loyal members of the battalion, even tattooing the Republic crest on his head. Jesse is eventually given command of the 332nd Division after Captain Rex resists carrying out Order 66.

Jesse is a clone with whom fans spend plenty of time over the years of the Clone Wars. As such, he quickly becomes a fan favorite among the frequently appearing 501st Legion, only to meet a dismal demise in the series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. His helmet is placed upon a spike outside the wreckage of his flagship, a symbolic gesture to end the series on a highly emotional note.

5 Kix

Star Wars Clone Trooper Kix

Clone trooper 6116 was nicknamed “Kix” by his fellow soldiers during the Clone Wars. Kix was a medic in the 501st who demonstrated true care for his brothers-in-arms, tending to focus on their wounds rather than the enemy shooting at him. Because of his altruism, Kix was one of the most well-loved members of the 501st.

Kix demonstrates exactly the attitude that a medic in the Clone Army should have, putting his wounded brothers above even his own safety. This clone proved to be one of the most amicable members of the 501st, who very nearly foiled the Separatist plot to exterminate the Jedi, though he was unable to do so due to the meddling of Count Dooku.

4 Tup

Clone Wars Tup

CT-5385, also known as “Tup” to his brothers in the 501st Legion, was a clone who served during several important events in the Clone Wars, including the Siege of Umbara. However, he is best known for killing Jedi General Tiplar after the inhibitor chip in his brain malfunctioned, foreshadowing the looming Order 66.

Tup was a clone whom many fans had followed for years during the events of The Clone Wars. After his programming malfunction, Tup becomes one of the franchise’s most sympathetic characters, who committed horrific acts unwillingly. In the end, Tup dies, but not without sparking a hint of curiosity in his compatriot Fives regarding the existence of the clones’ inhibitor chip.

3 Fives

Clone Trooper Fives looking scared in Star Wars The Clone Wars

CT-5555, nicknamed “Fives” by his clone brothers, was a rookie met in the early episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Proving himself early in his career, Fives is eventually promoted to an ARC-Trooper in the 501st Legion, serving the Republic in several high-profile missions.

As a member of the beloved Domino Squad, Fives watches in dismay as his teammates are killed one by one over the years until he is the last surviving member of the team of rookies that fans fell in love with. Ultimately, Fives stumbles upon a grand conspiracy to exterminate the Jedi and very nearly alters the course of the galaxy’s history, but is eventually killed for treason, marking one of the saddest deaths in the Star Wars franchise.

2 Echo

Echo from Star Wars

CT-1409 was a member of Domino Squad who was nicknamed “Echo” by his teammates for his constant repetition of superiors’ orders. Eventually promoted to the rank of ARC-Trooper, Echo served loyally under Anakin Skywalker for years until his apparent death while escaping the Separatist prison known as the Citadel.

Echo was recognizable among the other clones in the 501st for his lovable personality and the distinctive handprint on his chest plate. The character has been a beloved member of the franchise for years after his supposed death, making it all the more exciting when it was revealed that he had in fact survived the events of the Citadel escape. His recent role in the animated series The Bad Batch has only cemented his place as one of the best clones in the entire Star Wars franchise.

1 Captain Rex

Captain Rex in Star Wars The Clone Wars season 7

Captain Rex, otherwise designated CT-7567, was one of the earliest clones to be commissioned by the Kaminoans, eventually fighting in the First and Second Battles of Geonosis. Acting under the orders of his general, Anakin Skywalker, Rex would eventually aid Ahsoka Tano in the Siege of Mandalore, where he was promoted to the rank of commander.

Rex is not only one of the best members of the 501st, but he is also one of the franchise’s best characters. As one of the few Clones to resist carrying out Order 66, he would become a legend in the years following the Great Jedi Purge, eventually joining the Rebellion in taking down the evil Galactic Empire in the Battle of Endor.
