Camp Lejeune, located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, is one of the largest military bases in the U.S. and has been home to hundreds of thousands of service members, families, and civilian employees. Unfortunately, nearly 1 million people may have been exposed to contaminated water at the military base from 1953 to 1987.  

For over three decades, residents at Camp Lejeune drank and used polluted water in day-to-day tasks, like cooking, making formula, and bathing. Unbeknownst to them, the water contained high concentrations of dangerous contaminants, including perchloroethylene (PCE), 

trichloroethylene (TCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride. Leaking underground fuel tanks and improper waste disposal polluted the base’s water treatment plants that served residents, schools, recreational areas, and hospitals. 

Water testing conducted at Camp Lejeune uncovered contaminants at levels 240 to 3,400 times above the threshold considered acceptable by the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act. The chemicals in Camp Lejeune’s water supply have been linked to cancer, autoimmune disorders, neurobehavioral conditions, the deaths of newborns, reproductive issues, and birth defects.

Previously, victims of the dangerous water at Camp Lejeune were barred from filing lawsuits due to North Carolina law.
