The first look at the Blade Runner 2099 series at Prime Video is here.
During the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday (July 24), the studio revealed the first trailer for the series, which stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer in the lead and is executive-produced by Ridley Scott, director of the original 1982 film Blade Runner.
In the teaser above, we see the first glimpse of the humans’ next fight with the replicants, and it looks to be a grim one.
Here’s everything else we know so far about the latest addition to the Blade Runner universe.
When does Blade Runner 2099 premiere?
The series will premiere with all eight episodes dropping on Thursday, November 26, on Prime Video.
Who stars in Blade Runner 2099?
Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a Replicant at the end of her life, opposite Hunter Schafer as Cora, a fugitive who becomes a blade runner.
Also starring in the series are Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben, with recurring stars that include Kathlyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Shiela Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, Maurizio Lombardi, and Hugo Hamlet.
What is Blade Runner 2099 about?
The official description for the series tells us, “50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.”
Who creates Blade Runner 2099?
Silka Luisa serves as showrunner and executive producer of the series, and Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner, is also an executive producer. Also producing are Alcon Entertainment’s Andrew Kosove, Broderick Jonson, and Ben Roberts, along with Scott Free Productions’ David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger, as well as Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan Van Tulleken is also an executive producer and directed the first two episodes, and Steven Johnson coexecutive produces.
What else is there to know about Blade Runner 2099?
This series will be the seventh installment of the Blade Runner franchise, following the original movie; the 2017 sequel starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, Blade Runner 2049 from director Denis Villeneuve; the 2017 trilogy of short films Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run; and the 2021 anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus.
The original Blade Runner adapts Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick and is set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019, wherein synthetic humans known as replicants are bio-engineered to work on space colonies. However, when a fugitive group of advanced replicants escapes to Earth, a special police force known as blade runners is responsible for tracking them down and terminally “retiring” them. The sequel film takes place 30 years later, when a blade runner discovers he is the son of an experimental replicant and a former blade runner (the main character from the original, reprised by Ford), furthering the movement for replicant freedom.
Scott first revealed the television series was in the works in November 2021. Amazon joined the fold and announced it was in development in February 2022, and the series was formally greenlit in September 2022.
