Luke MacFarlane Is the MVP on Plantonic Season 2 Episode 5 As Charlie’s Mid-Life Crisis Begins

Luke MacFarlane Is the MVP on Plantonic Season 2 Episode 5 As Charlie’s Mid-Life Crisis Begins

Luke Macfarlane has always excelled at dramatic roles since he began on Brothers & Sisters, but he’s gotten to flex his funny bone acting alongside Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen on Platonic.

During Platonic Season 1, Charlie (MacFarlane) faded into the background as he dealt with his wife’s midlife crisis or adjusted to coping with having Will in their lives again.

However, Platonic Season 2 has given Charlie his own story. It’s been entertaining watching him prepare to compete on Jeopardy.

It’s been so long since Jeopardy has appeared on a series. Charlie fit the stereotype of the competent person who longed to compete on that game show and gain the approval of others.

That was the problem. If he had won, there would have been no hilarious meltdown; on Platonic Season 2 Episode 5, Charlie experienced an epic collapse.

Charlie’s Fear of Failure Catches Up to Him

I loved how Platonic showed an entire segment of Jeopardy, and not only a quick clip of the Final Jeopardy. It made more sense when I realized they had to show how badly Charlie bombed.

Charlie tried to fit into his “beast mode” persona, and that destroyed him when he added “mode” to the answers.

It went downhill from there, and Charlie looked dazed. His microphone came disconnected. It almost seemed like he tried too hard, so he got stage fright and kept messing up his dream.

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

He was embarrassed to face anyone at work, and he was determined to find someone at the studio to consent to pull that episode.

I felt for Charlie when Sylvia implied his feelings about his Jeopardy failure weren’t legitimate. It’s possible she was still mad that he suggested she quit her job all the time, but it seemed like a petty dig.

What Rights Did Will Have?

It’s a fine line the way Jenna treated Will after they ended their relationship. From a woman’s perspective, it had to hurt learning he came to San Diego to dump her. It’s difficult to blame her for lashing out.

It was priceless seeing Will’s face when he realized he no longer had a corporate credit card or a car, and that someone else was in his office.

To echo Sylvia, did he really think there would be no consequences for dumping Jenna?

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

However, Will also had a fair point that he worked at Jay 66 before he started dating Jenna. Watching them go at it was amusing.

Terry was not afraid of Will. While I initially liked Terry, I later suspected that he either worked for Jenna or was a stalker fan.

Does Will have any rights to his local Jay 66 pub, or will he need a new career?

Sylvia Was Determined to Soar

LOL. It’s always amusing when both Charlie and Will think the same harsh truth.

This time, the men thought Sylvia tended to run and quit when things got stressful.

(Apple TV+/Screenshot)

That made Sylvia more determined to prove to Charlie that she could host the best office party; however, she also adopted a persona that would come back to haunt her.

Hosting an annual office party and a retirement party for 1,500 guests may seem insane, but she wanted to impress Stewart.

She never should have pretended to have a membership to that exclusive club. Katie tried to be a fun wing woman, but those door women could not be bought.

Sylvia only got in because another gentleman thought she was a working girl in her little black dress. Oh, Sylvia, Katie gave you the wrong wardrobe advice.

Stewart had already informed all the partners about the new location, so Sylvia needed to convince the hostess to let them have the party; otherwise, everyone’s reputation was at risk.

(Apple TV+/Screenshot)

Male Bonding or Beast Mode?

Whenever Charlie and Will hang out, it’s entertaining because they are exact opposites. Charlie works hard to eat healthy and work out, which is evident by how hot Luke MacFarlane looks in that white t-shirt.

Even though Will generally prefers pizza, he wanted to feel Charlie’s muscles and try the weight machines as well.

  • I Watched the Supernatural Pilot 20 Years Later, and I Have Thoughts
    by Denis Kimathi

Will was so refreshingly honest when he admitted benching 90 pounds was like lifting a small woman.

That’s what Charlie needed to have a guy’s night and stop analyzing everything.

(Apple TV+/Screenshot)

But you couldn’t take the lawyer out of Charlie, who reacted when Terry started filming Will as he tried to pull down the banner that he specifically vetoed at Jay 66.

While Terry initially seemed amusing since he wasn’t intimidated by Will, he seemed more psycho and stalkerish as he recited everything about Will’s life, including his relationship with Charlie.

It was almost ironic that both Will and Charlie seemed to want to trade lives. Neither was happy with where they were at. Will wanted to be more stable and dependable, and Charlie wished he were more spontaneous.

While Charlie may need a new career, I don’t see him as a stripper or exotic dancer.

He’s too stressed about what people think of him, and that has caused him to break into one of the producers’ houses and try to steal the Jeopardy tape.

(Apple TV+/Screenshot)

Charlie had lost it. It was hilarious watching him break into that house and nearly break down, cause he was afraid to climb the wall to escape again. He really needed Will there.

Over to you, Platonic Fanatics. What were your thoughts on Charlie’s meltdown? Will Sylvia succeed at planning her next event?
