Doing small things that fill you with awe — a night sky, a vast view — measurably slows people’s sense of time and leaves them more generous afterwards

Awe has a strange effect on the mind. It can arrive from something enormous, like a night sky or a mountain view, but it can also come from something brief: a shaft of light through trees, a cathedral ceiling, a thunderhead building over the horizon, or a few quiet minutes looking at stars.

The feeling is not just poetic. In a 2012 Psychological Science paper, Melanie Rudd, Kathleen Vohs and Jennifer Aaker found that awe expanded people’s subjective sense of time. Compared with other emotional states, participants who felt awe reported having more time available, showed less impatience and became more willing to volunteer time to help others.

Awe changes the scale of the self

Researchers often define awe as an emotion triggered by perceived vastness, something that feels larger than the self and strains existing mental categories. Dacher Keltner and Jonathan Haidt laid out that framework in a 2003 paper on awe as a moral, spiritual and aesthetic emotion, arguing that awe involves both vastness and a need to adjust how we understand what we are seeing.

That vastness does not have to mean danger or grandeur on a cinematic scale. A person can feel awe looking up at constellations from a driveway, standing at the edge of a lookout, watching the sea breathe against rocks or seeing old trees rise above a path. The trigger can be small in duration but large in felt scale.

Part of awe’s power is that it makes ordinary self-concern less dominant. The deadline, the inbox, the small irritation and the private status worry do not necessarily disappear, but they can shrink for a moment against something wider.

Why time seems to open up

Most people know the opposite feeling: time famine. The day feels sliced into obligations. Attention keeps jumping toward the next task. Even free time can feel already spent. In that state, the mind treats time as scarce before the clock has proved it.

Rudd and colleagues tested whether awe could interrupt that scarcity. In one experiment, participants exposed to an awe-inducing stimulus felt less impatient than those in a happiness condition. In another, awe increased people’s sense that they had time available, which then helped explain their greater willingness to spend time helping others.

The important phrase is “sense of time.” Awe does not change the clock. It changes the psychological container around the clock. A minute under the stars can feel different from a minute refreshing a phone because attention is gathered, not scattered.

The generosity effect

The generosity finding is especially interesting because the resource was time, not simply money. In the 2012 study, awe made participants more willing to volunteer their time. The researchers argued that awe brings people into the present moment, and that this expanded present helps loosen the feeling that time is too scarce to give away.

Later research connected awe to broader prosocial behavior. Paul Piff and colleagues reported in a 2015 Journal of Personality and Social Psychology paper that awe was associated with greater generosity, ethical decision-making and helping, partly through what researchers call the “small self.”

The small self is not self-hatred or insignificance in a bleak sense. It is a softer recalibration. The self feels less central, less swollen by its own needs, and more connected to something larger. That shift can make another person’s need easier to notice.

A walk can be enough

Awe is often described as rare, but studies suggest it can be cultivated through modest habits. In an “awe walk” study, Virginia Sturm and colleagues asked older adults to take regular walks while orienting their attention toward vastness, novelty and the wider world around them. The work, published in Emotion, found increases in prosocial positive emotions and changes in the way participants represented themselves in photos over time.

That is why the idea of doing small awe-filled things matters. You do not need a once-in-a-lifetime eclipse or a trip to the edge of a canyon. You may need a deliberate pause in a place where your attention can be pulled outward.

A night sky works because it is both familiar and impossible. The stars are part of ordinary human life, yet the scale behind them overwhelms ordinary categories. A vast view works for similar reasons: it gives the mind more space than the day’s immediate problems usually allow.

Why awe makes people less trapped in themselves

Researchers are still debating exactly why awe has prosocial effects. Joshua Perlin and Leon Li reviewed the question in Perspectives on Psychological Science, arguing that awe may affect the self at several levels, not only by redirecting attention away from self-focused concerns.

That caution is useful. Awe is not a simple kindness switch. It can feel wonderful, unsettling or even frightening depending on the context. Natural disasters, vast crowds and overwhelming authority can also evoke awe-like responses, not all of them benign.

But in everyday, nonthreatening forms, awe seems to loosen the grip of personal urgency. It can make the self feel smaller without making life feel less meaningful. In fact, the smaller self can sometimes make the world feel more meaningful because attention is no longer trapped inside the narrow frame of “me and my next problem.”

The practical version

The practical lesson is not that awe should become another productivity hack. That would almost miss the point. Awe works partly because it interrupts the instrumental mind, the part that keeps asking what every moment is for.

Still, the evidence suggests that small doses can matter. Look at the night sky without immediately photographing it. Take the long route past the water. Stand somewhere high enough to see distance. Visit a museum room that makes you quiet. Watch clouds move as if they are allowed to take their time.

These moments do not add hours to the day. They change how crowded the day feels from the inside. And when time feels less clenched, people may become a little more willing to spend it on someone else.

That is the quiet promise of awe: it does not make us larger. It makes the world larger again, and in that wider world, there may be more room for patience, generosity and attention than we thought.
