A Nutritionist Separates Fact from Fiction

Cortisol has become the internet’s favorite villain. Scroll for five minutes, and you’ll see a puffy jawline blamed on it, a stalled weight-loss plateau traced back to it, and a $40 mocktail promising to fix both by morning. As a nutrition consultant, I get asked about “resetting cortisol” (and when you should eat protein, of course) more than almost anything else these days. The answer disappoints people every time: Your nervous system doesn’t work like a router. You can’t unplug it for a few days and expect everything to magically reconnect.

Meet the Cortisol-Reset Trifecta

The reset trend usually takes one of three shapes. There’s the cortisol cocktail—a mix of coconut water, orange juice, and salt, sometimes with cream of tartar or magnesium powder stirred in—sipped first thing in the morning. There’s the supplement stack, capsules marketed as cortisol blockers or adrenal support, often bundled with vague promises about hormone balance. And there’s cortisol face (yes, that’s an actual term!), the idea that facial puffiness is a visible sign your stress hormone has spiraled out of control.

What the Research Says

The problem with trends is that they can make big, sweeping claims sound very scientific. Let’s take the cortisol cocktail, for example. I dug deep, and there isn’t a single study on the drink itself. In fact, its individual nutrients have only been studied at doses far higher than what you’d get from a glass. Medical experts have looked into the trend, and the placebo effect likely explains why it helps. Yes, feeling calmer matters, but that’s not the same as lowering cortisol. If you enjoy the ritual of a morning mocktail, keep having it! Just don’t expect it to do the metabolic work the marketing implies.

Where the Science Holds Up: Ashwagandha

To no surprise, most cortisol supplements are adaptogens riding on borrowed credibility. Ashwagandha is the one exception. Interestingly, a 2025 meta-analysis found that ashwagandha significantly lowered cortisol compared to placebo. But here’s the catch: Some of those same studies found no meaningful change in perceived stress. Your cortisol number can move without your day feeling any different, which tells you something about how disconnected a lab value can be from lived experience. Bear in mind that adaptogens aren’t right for everyone either.

Ashwagandha isn’t generally recommended during pregnancy, and it can interact with thyroid medication. Consult your doctor if you manage Hashimoto’s or another autoimmune thyroid condition.

Think of Stress Like a Rhythm

If your goal is to support a healthy cortisol response (the case for most of us), you don’t need to start with a supplement. The biggest levers are much more ordinary. And they work by supporting the foundational systems that regulate cortisol in the first place. The easiest way to think of cortisol is like a rhythm (not an on-off switch). Ideally, it should peak about 30-45 minutes after you wake up and taper down by bedtime. The things that keep that rhythm intact are refreshingly unglamorous.

The Levers That Cortisol Loves

So, how do you support that rhythm on a daily basis? Start with the basics.

1. Get outside in the morning.

Getting natural light within the first hour of waking helps anchor your circadian rhythm and signals to your body that it’s time to be awake and alert. If you can’t go for a walk, sip your coffee alternative, or even brush your teeth outside!

2. Keep your sleep schedule consistent.

A consistent sleep and wake time works wonders, even on weekends. Try to wake up and go to bed within roughly the same 30- to 60-minute window each day. And yes, that means resisting the urge to completely flip your schedule on Saturday and Sunday. An erratic sleep schedule can disrupt the same body clock that a cortisol reset drink is trying to shortcut.

3. Start the day with protein.

Most of my clients underestimate how much blood-sugar stability plays a role in lowering stress. Instead of starting your day with coffee and a pastry or a green juice, build breakfast around a solid source of protein. Think scrambled egg whites with avocado toast, Greek yogurt with berries and hemp seeds, or a protein-packed smoothie. Pairing protein with fiber-rich carbs and healthy fats is essential for a satisfying and satiating breakfast.

4. Don’t underestimate everyday movement.

You don’t need to turn every workout into a stress-management session. A 20-minute dumbbell strength session, a few minutes of air squats or a couple flights of stairs between meetings, or a modest post-meal walk can all help you get out of the cycle of sitting for hours and then trying to make up for it with one intense workout.

The bigger point? None of this happens in a weekend. It happens on repeat, which is a far less exciting pitch than a 3-day reset. But it’s the version that scientifically checks the boxes when you understand how the HPA axis works.

If you want the deeper dive on calming an overactive nervous system day to day, Nervous System Regulation 101 covers that ground well.

When It’s a Medical Issue to Address

Everyday stress—even a rough month of it—doesn’t typically push cortisol high enough to cause the dramatic symptoms we see online. Persistently elevated cortisol, though, is a different story entirely. It’s a medical condition called Cushing’s syndrome, and it comes with specific markers: significant weight gain concentrated in the face and midsection, muscle weakness, and purple stretch marks, among others. It’s rare, and doctors diagnose it with blood or saliva tests (not a TikTok filter or a mirror check). If something feels off or you notice rapid changes you can’t explain, reach out to your provider.

FAQ

Does the cortisol reset trend work?

Not in the way it’s marketed. There’s no evidence that a cortisol cocktail or a short detox protocol resets your nervous system, and most of what’s driving the trend is normal cortisol fluctuation being mistaken for dysfunction.

What lowers cortisol?

As mentioned, consistent sleep and wake times, morning-light exposure, stable blood sugar, and regular movement all support a healthy cortisol rhythm over time. Ashwagandha has real research behind it too, though it won’t necessarily change how stressed you feel day to day.

Is cortisol face real?

Facial puffiness can have a lot of causes, from sodium intake to allergies to poor sleep, and stress can be one contributing factor. But there’s no evidence that ordinary stress alone produces the kind of visible, cortisol-driven swelling the trend claims.

When should I see a doctor about cortisol?

If you’re noticing dramatic, unexplained weight gain, especially concentrated in your face or midsection, along with muscle weakness or new stretch marks, that’s worth bringing to a doctor for testing.

Camille Styles bedroon_cortisol reset explained

My Verdict on the Cortisol Reset

To bring this full circle, cortisol isn’t inherently a problem. We need it to function! Chronic stress, on the other hand, will eventually take a toll on your health. The reality? A trendy drink or ‘cortisol-balancing’ capsule won’t fix the root cause. Lasting change comes from implementing the stress-relieving habits that tend to get glossed over on social media, like sleep, morning light, nourishing meals, and connecting with your loved ones. If you want a ritual that feels good in the afternoon, keep the adrenal cocktail. Just don’t confuse a comforting ritual with a cortisol intervention.
