Ryan Reynolds confirms that Deadpool 3 will protect Logan’s legacy after the 2017 film saw Hugh Jackman seemingly bid farewell to Wolverine.
Deadpool 3 star Ryan Reynolds confirms that the upcoming MCU release will respect the legacy left behind by Logan. After two successful and popular installments, Reynolds’ Deadpool is finally set to join the MCU with Deadpool 3. The film will be directed by Free Guy director Shawn Levy and, most notably, is confirmed to feature the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. After playing the role for over 15 years, Jackman seemingly bid farewell to Wolverine with James Mangold’s Logan, which ended with his character’s emotional death and proved popular with audiences and critics alike.
In a recent interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ryan Reynolds assures fans that Deadpool 3 will protect Logan‘s legacy. The star previously hinted in a video with Jackman that Mangold’s 2017 hit will continue to stand on its own, but his most recent comment affirms that Wolverine’s arc and powerful ending in the film will not be altered or otherwise retconned. Check out Reynold’s full comment below:
“We figured out a way to do it that’s Hugh Jackman approved and Kevin Feige approved, where we’re completely protecting the legacy of Logan, the way it was left off. We wouldn’t mess with that.”
Why Logan Remains So Beloved
After a number of X-Men team-up movies and several standalone entries of varying quality, Logan was marketed as Jackman’s final time playing the role of Wolverine. In a stark departure from previous films, Logan earned an R-rating and features an abundance of violence, swearing, and mature themes. In addition to finally showing off Wolverine’s sheer brutality without the shackles of a PG-13 rating, the film features a powerful emotional arc for the character as he cares for an ailing Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and X-23/ Laura (Dafne Keen), his young clone.
Despite the film’s heavy subject matter and the relentless punishment that Wolverine endures throughout its runtime, the film remains beloved among fans even five years later in part because it provides Jackman’s hero with a definitive ending. Boasting some impressive healing abilities, Wolverine never totally felt at risk of dying in any previous X-Men movie, something that Logan strips away. Set in 2029, Logan sees Wolverine’s healing powers diminished, with the character slowly being poisoned by the Adamantium within his body. Jackman’s hero ultimately sacrifices himself in order to secure Laura’s future in the film’s emotional climax, providing him with a moving and seemingly permanent ending.
How Deadpool 3 Can Avoid Affecting Logan
While Logan takes place in its very own futuristic timeline, Deadpool 3 is an MCU movie, meaning the two are essentially completely unrelated. Futhermore, even if they were to take place in the same universe, Deadpool 3 will likely be a story set in the present day before the events of Logan even occur. Deadpool often breaks the fourth wall to make meta jokes, but Reynolds’ most recent comment suggests that references to Logan might be off-limits for the character in Deadpool 3 out of respect for the film’s Wolverine arc, a move that is sure to sit well with fans.
