Home maintenance is thought to be a chore for the spring and summer months.  There are steps you should take during the cooler months to ensure your home will keep you warm and cosy.  When you properly maintain your home you lessen the chance of experiencing a costly and unexpected disaster.

Seal In Heat

Inspect your windows and doors for heat loss. Over time your windows and doors can lose their tight fit.  Small gaps allow warm air out and cold air in.  If your windows rattle, they most likely need sealing.  This can be done with inexpensive weather stripping.  Use caulk around windows and doors where the frame meets the wall.

This is a task most homeowners can easily do themselves.

Maintain Trees

Inspect all the trees and landscaping on your property and look for potential problems.  Overgrown foliage, dead branches, leaning trees, limbs growing around power or utility lines, are all signs you need to maintain your trees.

The cooler months are the best time of year to maintain trees on your property.

You can do it yourself or find a tree lopping service in Brisbane.

Gutter Maintenance

Regularly check your gutters for any leaves and debris that may have collected.  Left untended an overflowing drain can cause water damage to your siding or foundation.

An old kitchen spatula or pair of tongs can help you scoop everything out.  Avoid pushing anything into the downspout.  Once you have the debris removed, rinse with your garden hose for a thorough cleaning.  This will check if there are any unseen blockages in your downspouts keeping water from draining properly.

Proper home maintenance not only makes your home more enjoyable for you, but also increases its resale value.

Check Your Heating System

Experts agree that you should have your heating system checked at least once a year. You should have your furnace checked for any safety issues, but also perform preventative maintenance that can avoid your furnace going out in the middle of a cold front. This is definitely a job you want done by a professional.

A gas furnace should have the vents checked for any leaks or blockages. An ignition check should be done for all burners and any hoses or drainage systems should be checked for leaks.

Check Your Smoke and Carbon Dioxide Detectors

Fresh air flow is minimised during the cooler months.  Your home is more prone to a build-up of dangerous gasses, such as carbon monoxide. Furnaces and heating systems tend to dry out the air in your home, so is there is a spark or small fire, it can escalate much faster.

The risk of someone dying in a fire is cut in half if you have a working smoke alarm in your home.  Fire safety officials recommend regular maintenance.  This is a chore most homeowners can easily do themselves.

If you take care of your home on a regular basis, you will increase your pride of ownership and maintain your home value for many years to come.
