With Amazon’s The Boys hitting it’s third season, comic series’ artist Darick Robertson returns to give the Vol. 1 a new cover inspired by the show.
With the Amazon adaptation of The Boys reaching it’s long-awaited third season, series’ artist Darick Robertson is returning to provide an updated cover for the first volume of the notorious comic.
For more than 70 issues, Darick Robertson worked with writer Garth Ennis to create The Boys, a mature superhero deconstruction story. Centered around a clandestine CIA group that observes and responds to illegal superhero (or “Supe”) activity, Ennis and Robertson’s comic was infamous for its graphic violence and intense commentary on the superhero genre. The Boys gained an even greater audience when it was adapted into a streaming television series for Amazon’s Prime service, with actors such as Karl Urban, Jack Quaid and Anthony Starr in its lead roles. The revival of interest in the property has prompted Dynamite Comics to re-release The Boys to give its new audience a chance at exploring the show’s source material.
Now with the third season finally making its way into the homes of fans, Dynamite is capitalizing on the excitement. The official account of The Boys show announced on Twitter that Name of the Game, a collection of the comic book’s first six issues, would be getting a new release. In commemoration of the 15th anniversary since the publisher first released Vol. 1, Darick Robertson was brought back in to create a new cover for the trade paperback. The cover also doubles as a bit of promotion for the third season of the Amazon show, with the appearance of each member of the titular Boys based on their live-action counterparts. After the cat was let out of the bag, Darick Robertson took to his own Twitter to provide a more in-depth look at his work, including the black and white and textless versions of his new cover.
It’s been 15 years since @DynamiteComics first published Vol. 1 – Name of the Game, so we tagged comic co-creator @DarickR to help us with a lil’ Season 3-themed cover update. Keep that money in your pants for now lads; we’ll drop the link when it goes on sale soon. pic.twitter.com/kWaEGb31R9

Aside from being a fantastic work in and of itself, Robertson’s signature style manages to capture the vibe of each actor’s take on The Boys’ title heroes. The reveal of Vol. 1’s new cover comes a few months after the announcement of the series’ latest collection, an oversized omnibus that collects the first 26 issues of The Boys. The show has been a boon to Dynamite, which is no doubt excited to direct the attention of fans of the Amazon show to the comic that started it all.
In a world where comic book adaptations are becoming a much more common occurrence, it only makes sense for publishers to issue new editions of previously released material. It makes it easier for fans to get their hands on the source material for their new favorite shows and see how the two mediums compare. Bringing back Darick Robertson is also just good sense because it acknowledges the importance the original creators had on the journey of bringing a property like The Boys to life. While viewers prepare to enjoy the latest season of Amazon’s The Boys, fans interested in checking out the original series should keep an eye out for the first volume featuring Darick Robertson‘s new cover.
