The tradition continued. Each season, around the fourth or fifth episode, the GBI and APD have worked together on a case.
They teamed up again because of a curious CIA investigation on Will Trent Season 3 Episode 4, but the dynamics were off because Will and Angie were barely speaking. Faith and Michael felt the shift, affecting the team camaraderie.
The foursome quickly realized that the victim had connections to the DOD, and the suspects thought they were in the CIA with orders to kill him.
This installment was dramatic and humorous and kept you on your toes.
Will Trent Season 3 has excelled by adding enough relationship and personal drama with each case to keep viewers interested in the characters’ lives and the intriguing cases.
Will Trent’s Weekly Case Featured Shades of Alias
Spies visited Atlanta, and as predicted, the case contained lots of humor, beginning with the “Floor is Lava,” as Faith called it.
It was hilarious to watch both teams leap on the furniture while hunting for clues. They weren’t expecting the suspect to leave them such good clues, like long brown hair strands and an actual driver’s incense.
If only it stayed that easy since Hannah Anderson thought she was a spy who worked for the CIA and had immunity to kill Llyod.
Initially, I thought the series might take it similarly to what Law and Order did a few weeks ago when an FBI recruited others to stop terrorists, but Will Trent combined comic relief with realistic crime scenes.
Bringing in the actual CIA was an intelligent move, and it was amusing how badly Michael wanted Officer Case to respect him. He would have done anything to solve that case.
Hannah Anderson was brilliant and knew quickly that Michael wasn’t working for her handler, yet he still received his name, Cutter.
Apparently, Cutter had been busy. He had also recruited Kent, who never wanted to kill anyone and was freaking out after killing Llyod’s research assistant.
I loved the throwback of Cutter meeting lonely people in an Alias online forum. What a perfect way to recruit spies. It was even funnier that Will and Faith had no reference to the series, and Angie and Michael, along with Marion, had to educate them.
Who hasn’t heard of Alias?
That scene of them watching Alias together and discovering how Helen’s favorite episode related was so good!
She was so crushed to learn she wasn’t a spy. In the Law and Order universe, she would still have been sent to prison, even if she had helped them find the handler. Man, how different things are.
Luckily, they identified Gwen. Llyod’s partner, as soon as she mentioned he loved opera.
Only the GBI and APD could crack a case following the suspect at an international chess tournament. It was another high-stakes case, but they wouldn’t let Glen sell secrets or kill anyone else.
Will and Angie Avoided the Subject Until an Emotional Confrontation Occurred
Will and Angie hadn’t seen each other in over six months. It was awkward and unexpected running into one another at a crime scene, even more so when Will nearly fell into Angie’s arms.
Initially, Will tried to avoid the awkwardness and focus on the case, but Faith wanted him to face his feelings head-on, something Will hates.
Let me help. Does one of these statements feel true? I am still in love with her. I am angry with her. I feel guilty about what I did. I am sad.
— Faith
You have to love Faith. She’s a true friend that doesn’t beat around the bush.
Throughout the episode, Will and Angie bumped into each other and were polite but civil, but tension bubbled. Angie looked hurt when she thought he had moved on with Marion.
They kept their conversation minimal until they bumped into each other at the bar, and Angie couldn’t escape.
You could tell there was a long history between these two on and off-screen because little smiles escaped as they caught up about Angie’s return to the force.
Only as they discussed the past did things erupt. Will always saw things in black and white, and Angie always stepped over the line to defend victims she was passionate about.
Neither is necessarily right or wrong, but Angie felt betrayed.
Angie: You blew up our life! We were building something! We were finally in a good place. We were talking about having kids.
Will: You think I don’t know that? I fought for this relationship first, and I wanted it more than anything.
It may be challenging for them to be more than polite co-workers, and that’s heartbreaking after everything they’ve been through.
Amanda Adapted to Raising a Teenager
While Amanda loves and considers Will and Faith like family, she technically didn’t raise them, so parenting a child is new territory for her.
She had to balance being strict with compassion when Sunny got into a fight at school. That’s one of the most challenging things for children in the system, especially those who were recently shuffled to a new home and don’t feel safe.
Sunny needed guidelines to tell Amanda the truth without feeling like she would be punished.
The tough act failed until Sunny saw Amanda acting like a badass and capturing one of the bad guys. That’s something she admired, and part of her wanted to be like Amanda.
Amanda used that to get the teen to confide in her. When she learned other teens were ridiculing her, she taught her some self-defense moves.
That was an inspiring scene reminiscent of Stef teaching Mariana self-defense training in The Fosters Season 4.
It’s an essential skill that mothers should teach their daughters, and it helped Sunny let go of her emotions and feel safer with Amanda.
Will Trent Introduced Some New Duos
Marion (Gina Rodriguez) returned, and Angie immediately got the wrong idea as soon Marion came out of Will’s office wearing his shirt.
Marion and Will have an easy connection, and each had a messy relationship before. They need something lighter to become close friends first without the drama. Seeing them watch Alias with Faith was a delight. We need more of those moments.
Something about them elicits trust, so they confide in each other quickly. I like them so far and am cautiously watching their relationship progress.
Faith and Michael have spent more time together than Will Trent Season 3 began. Initially, I assumed they were becoming closer friends, but she’s the person who supported him through his divorce.
While Michael messed up by cheating on Gina, he’s reformed by becoming a better father. He’s a decent person, and it’s not fair for Gina to bleed him dry after she abandoned their family.
Michael struggles, thinking he has nothing to offer a potential new partner, especially after he learns Officer Case is interested in Angie, not him. That was a blow to his ego.
Luckily, Faith was there to pick up the pieces and suggested going to dinner to celebrate surviving the day with their partners.
I don’t know if that was a romantic gesture or a supportive friend. It’ll be intriguing to watch more interactions between them.
Over to you, Will Trent Fanatics. What was your favorite part of “Floor is Lava?” Did you enjoy the throwbacks to Alias? Should Angie and Will be friends again?
