Senator Tim Scott laid into his Democrat colleagues for having used “a filibuster they now call racist” to block his own police reform efforts, even as President Biden is now “embracing” elements of those same proposals.
Biden, quite oddly, followed former President Barack Obama’s lead in taking the focus off a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas to instead mark the two-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death by announcing an executive order addressing police reform.
“I’ve gotten to know George Floyd’s family over the years and I promised them that his name will not just become a hashtag,” Biden tweeted. “Today, I signed an Executive Order to deliver on that promise and enact the most significant police reform in decades.”
The order, according to the President, will “increase accountability, ban chokehold, (and) restrict no-knock entries.”
He also blamed Republicans for having “stood in the way of progress.”
Scott (R-SC) couldn’t help but notice Biden’s reforms in part bore some similarities to his own efforts which were scuttled by Democrats in 2020 when they stood in the way of progress.
I’ve called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, but Senate Republicans have stood in the way of progress. That’s why this afternoon, I’m taking action and signing an Executive Order that delivers the most significant police reform in decades.

Senator Tim Scott tore into Democrats for having propped up the current crime wave with their anti-police rhetoric and noted they used the filibuster to squash his own police reform efforts.
“After the radical ‘defund the police’ movement helped create the current crime wave, President Biden is pursuing a partisan approach to many of the exact same policy solutions I proposed in the JUSTICE Act just two years ago,” he said in a statement.
“The fact is Democrats used a filibuster they call racist to block my reforms that they’re now embracing.”
While there are certainly differences between Biden’s executive order, Scott is right to note the Democrat is now embracing some elements of his JUSTICE Act.
Scott’s proposal sought to promote minority hiring within police departments, implement a database to hold bad cops accountable, and would restrict chokeholds.
And yes, the Democrats did use the filibuster – something they now say is a tool of ‘white nationalists‘ and a ‘Jim crow relic‘ – to block it.
Joe Biden says that Republicans “opposed any meaningful reform” to policing.

Not only did Democrats filibuster Tim Scott’s police reform bill, but they lobbed racist insults in his direction for having made the attempt in the first place.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted restricting chokeholds was not good enough and accused Republicans like Scott of “trying to get away with … the murder of George Floyd.”

Scott noted that during the process of developing the Republican plan for police reform, many Democrats referred to him as a “token” or “boy.”
The Senator from South Carolina also admitted during that time that he was the recipient of numerous “racist messages” and placed the blame squarely on “liberal Democrats.”
Not surprising the last 24 hours have seen a lot of “token” “boy” or “you’re being used” in my mentions. Let me get this straight…you DON’T want the person who has faced racial profiling by police, been pulled over dozens of times, or been speaking out for YEARS drafting this?

The fact is, as with any tragic event that affects the collective national psyche, Democrats only see political points and how to score them.
There was absolutely no way in hell they were going to allow Republicans and then-President Trump to score a victory by passing police reform legislation written by a black man.
They were even willing to use the ‘racist’ filibuster to do it, paving the way for Joe Biden to earn points with the ‘defund the police’ crowd nearly two years later.
Scott addressed Biden’s executive order and noted some differences in the President’s reform efforts that would “set (police) departments up for failure” and make it “harder for police to do their jobs to the best of their ability.”
“I’m disappointed that the president who campaigned on unity has once again fallen into the trap of divisive politics,” he concluded.
