Marxist Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon walked back his previous statement after being called out by Sheriff Alex Villanueva for lying about the county sheriff’s department’s involvement in a recent sentencing. Gascon alleged the sheriff’s department “agreed with the felony charges” and “lightweight” sentencing against a teen who mowed down a mother and her 8-month-old infant, Fox News reported.
In August 2021, a driver, who was 16 at the time, plowed over a mother and her infant and was sentenced to “juvenile probation camp” thanks to Marxist Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon.
The mother, identified as “Rachel,” was pushing her infant in a stroller down an alleyway when the teen sped up in a stolen vehicle and ran over her.
“I thought those were the last moments of our lives; we were dead,” the mother, who asked to be identified only as Rachel, wrote in a victim’s impact statement. “That feeling, along with the memory of a car accelerating directly into us, will haunt me forever.”
The crime was caught on surveillance videos.
Despite the crime being caught on video with multiple witnesses present, Gascon’s office gave the teen the lightest possible sentence.
An earlier statement by the progressive district attorney obtained by Fox News Digital claimed that the LA County Sheriff’s Department agreed with the charges and sentencing.
“The Sheriff’s Department agreed with the felony charges that were filed. At the arraignment, the minor admitted two felony counts of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and one felony count of hit-and-run. The Probation Department recommended, and the court sentenced the minor to a youth camp for five to seven months, an appropriate resolution.”
The LA County Sheriff’s Department called out Gascon publicly on a Facebook post for lying in his statement about the department’s involvement in the prosecution.
“Today, the LA County district attorney’s office released a statement claiming that the Sheriff’s Department was ok with the lightweight sentencing in a brutal hit and run in Venice CA,” Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.
“We were never consulted as we were not the Investigating agency. Sheriff’s Investigators would never be ok with the lightweight sentencing in this hit-and-run case. Stop empowering and encouraging criminal behavior. Hold them accountable,” he added.
Gascon’s office retracted its previous statement on Saturday saying that the sheriff’s department was not involved.
“Need to correct our statement from yesterday. LASD was not involved in the decision on the felony charge, as they were not the investigating agency in that case,” a spokesperson said.
