It would not be too out there to suggest you suffer from stress and anxiety, would it? After all, even if you didn’t click on this post, simply look around you. It’s no wonder people are going through it, but rather than be a slave to their mental health issues, many are seeking ways to take back control so they can be their best selves.
Sounds great, right? But it’s not always that simple. Before you jump on the latest mental health trend you are inundated with scrolling through TikTok, consider some of the more traditional and effective approaches and see if you can combine them to become the person you always knew you could be.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep is essential for reducing anxiety and stress. The less sleep you have, the more tired you are. The more tired you are, the more challenging it is to focus and be at your best. Combine these and your performance at work will suffer and you will struggle to be present for your partner, family, and friends. Although the optimal amount of sleep varies between individuals, the average adult needs eight hours.
Eat Better
Similarly, eating better can help you sleep and improve your energy levels. Although ordering takeout or picking something up at the local deli is convenient, you may not get to choose the right ingredients to help you improve your diet. Introduce more fruits and vegetables into your diet if you don’t eat enough already. Furthermore, add superfoods like chia seeds, olive oil, and nuts to dishes to give them an extra benefit and help you get more nutrients.
Exercise
Better sleep and an improved diet can help your workouts become more effective. It takes a while to establish a routine where you see results, but exploring the best exercises for a mental health boost will make it feel more natural as you look forward to every workout instead of forcing yourself to pull on your running shoes and go to the gym. These results will eventually prove that all your hard work was worth it as you see your body change which can also boost your confidence and improve your mental well-being.
Do Something You Enjoy
You could also benefit from doing something you enjoy. This could be going to the gym or working out, but these are not your only options. However, what can you do if you don’t have any hobbies or activities you can see yourself doing? You don’t want to sit at home watching TV because you’ll get restless, but you may also not want to go out and go for a walk. Try something creative and affordable you can do at home or join local clubs that can help you learn more about hobbies you’ve been interested in but never tried.
Start Prioritizing Yourself
Many people struggle with mental health issues like anxiety and stress because they do too much for others without focusing on themselves. This is admirable, but it can also be overwhelming. If you feel like you never look after yourself and always put others first, take a step back and take care of yourself. Treat yourself to a self-care day. Have a lie-in. Let your partner deal with cooking, cleaning, and getting the kids ready. Afterward, you’ll feel refreshed and ready to get back to life.
Work With Professionals
However, you can’t always solve your mental health problems yourself. Sometimes, you need extra support from trained professionals. Therapy and counseling are two excellent ways to learn different techniques to cope with mental health issues and even overcome them. These are not always the optimal solution, though, and you may require rehab for depression if you struggle with more debilitating mental health problems.
Ditch Social Media (Even Just Temporarily)
Social media may help you stay up-to-date with friends, celebrities, and online trends, but these addictive platforms also hurt your mental well-being. It’s not healthy to spend all day scrolling through social media engaging with idiots, or comparing yourself to overly filtered influencers. If you never feel better after being online, give yourself a break. Delete the apps and suspend your account and get out and enjoy the world instead.
The Perfect Mixture
There’s no such thing as the one-size fits all cocktail for treating mental health because everyone deals with life and their struggles differently. However, you always rely on several activities and self-care ideas to make managing your problems easier. So, take your time, find out what works, and combine the most effective methods that help you grow into your best self.
