Following several Morbius memes, particularly “Morbin’ Time,” Jared Leto chimes in on the joke with a fake script for Morbius 2. Since Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy came to an end, Sony Pictures has continued to flesh out its own Marvel cinematic universe apart from Marvel Studios. The so-called Sony’s Spider-Man Universe started with Venom, featuring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock as he became the franchise’s first anti-hero through the infamous Symbiote. Following the success of the first Venom movie, it didn’t take long for Sony to not only greenlight a sequel but start building out their Spidey-inspired universe.
After Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the next Spider-Man villain to get the anti-hero treatment was Morbius, portrayed by Suicide Squad star Jared Leto. In Morbius, directed by Daniel Espinosa, the story follows Michael Morbius, who has been suffering from a rare blood illness that he attempts to cure through vampire bats. However, this experiment causes Michael to turn into his Marvel Comics counterpart. In the end, Morbius underperformed at the box office and was critically panned, with a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes amongst reviewers.
While Morbius may not have accomplished the success Sony Pictures was looking for, the comic book product has resulted in thousands of memes and jokes about the Marvel film. One of the ones that caught Leto’s attention was “Morbin’ Time,” a nod to the Power Rangers. In a new video that Leto posted to Twitter, the camera person walks up to the actor, seeing he is reading a script, which is revealed to be a fake screenplay for Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time. Even though Morbius was a flop, the Marvel movie is heading back into theaters. Despite Leto’s gag video, it’s worth remembering that Sony Pictures has not commented on whether or not they will try to make a Morbius 2, especially after the box office results. While Morbius may not go forward as a franchise, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is still swinging forward with new characters. Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be starring as Sergei Kravinoff, a.k.a. Kraven, in Kraven the Hunter, which is currently in the midst of principal photography. Dakota Johnson will be headlining Madame Web as the titular hero, as the film has been adding several new cast members over the last few months.
As funny as some of the Morbius memes have been, it’s great to see Leto’s response and that he’s able to chime in on the fun. Even though there may not be a Morbius 2, that doesn’t necessarily mean his time as the Marvel anti-hero is over. Due to the post-credits scene between Morbius and Michael Keaton’s Vulture, there is at least a Spider-Man-related storyline for the studio to go forward with in some capacity. Given that Sony Pictures is continuing to establish its new universe, Leto could easily reprise the character in future movies, whether it be with characters they haven’t announced yet or the confirmed Venom 3. Only time will tell, but for now, Morbius seems to be a franchise that has been put on ice.
