Tom Hardy’s Venom movies have become so popular that a new spider was named after Hardy’s Venom. While Spider-Man has been glaringly missing from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Hardy’s Venom movies have served as the main creative force of the franchise. According to specialized box office tracking website Box Office Mojo, 2018’s Venom ended its worldwide run with $856 million, and while Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s $506.8 million fell short of the original, Hardy’s Venom has proved to be very popular with audiences.
In the Evolutionary Systematics journal, a newly discovered Australian spider has been named after Hardy and Venom — Venomius tomhardyi.
Scientists MSc Giullia Rossi, Dr Pedro Castanheira, Dr Volker Framenau, and Dr Renner Baptista felt the two black spots on the spider’s abdomen were reminiscent of Venom’s head, which compelled them to name the Australian spider after Hardy and the Marvel anti-hero.
How Tom Hardy’s Venom Has Left A Lasting Legacy On Marvel Movies
Hardy’s Venom is not part of the MCU, even though he appeared in Marvel Studios’ universe for short cameos during Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s post-credits scene as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene. While the actor could return in a future movie during the MCU’s Multiverse Saga to finally interact with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Hardy’s legacy in Marvel movies is safe even if that never happens.
Hardy’s Venom stands as the founding character of an entire cinematic universe, with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe using his Eddie Brock in the same role that the MCU featured Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in. For his part, Hardy responded to Sony’s belief in him by giving it his all in the two Venom movies so far. The actor’s performance as the troubled Eddie Brock is magnetic, and it matches up brilliantly with the actor’s voice role as Venom, creating one of the more compelling relationships in superhero movies.
With Venom 3 set to arrive in 2024, Hardy could potentially be nearing the end of his time as the Marvel character. If that ends up being the case, Hardy has left a mark on Marvel movies. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe weirdly focuses on Spider-Man villains as anti-heroes, a trend that Hardy’s successful Venom proved was possible. The SSU will continue to expand over the years, with movies like Kraven the Hunter and series such as the announced Silk: Spider Society and Spider-Man Noir show. If it weren’t for Hardy’s performance as Venom, the SSU’s plans would not be possible.
