This article contains major spoilers for The Witcher season 3, part 2.Yennefer actor Anya Chalotra is looking forward to getting the chance to star alongside Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher. After Henry Cavill agreed to step down from his role, season 3 saw his final outing as the Butcher of Blaviken. With a war with Nilfgaard on the horizon, Yennefer and Geralt of Rivia will need to band together if they want to find a way to keep Ciri (Freya Allan) safe. Hemsworth will replace Cavill as the titular character starting with season 4.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Chalotra spoke about her character’s chemistry with the Hemsworth version in The Witcher season 4, remaining optimistic about the new phase. Check out her quote below:
“I’m not worried. He’s going to be brilliant. I really think so. I mean, we’ve spent five years going on this journey together, and I’m so excited for Henry. At some point, that had to come to an end, his portrayal of Geralt, and that’s been incredible. We’ve had such a wonderful time with him. But also bringing in new people to this journey we’re on is so exciting at this stage.”
“The chemistry. Yeah, that. I know their relationship means a lot to people who love the books. It’s also just so complex, and, in every stage, there’s something else to be found. I mean, they’re 100-odd years old, and they’re still going [laughs]. They still love each other. There’s something there.”
The Henry Cavill Era Of The Witcher Is Over
The Witcher cast will continue season 4 and seemingly confirmed season 5 without Cavill. However, The Witcher season 3 ending leaves Cavill still holding onto Geralt’s role, so it is unclear how the transformation to Hemsworth’s version will transpire. The Netflix fantasy show honored Cavill with the chance to make his final appearance as the titular character, but it does mean Hemsworth will have to work hard to achieve Cavill’s caliber, particularly to win over audiences.
Unfortunately, Cavill’s departure leaves The Witcher in a vulnerable position since viewers applauded his embodiment of Geralt as near perfection. As a massive fan of The Witcher‘s books, he understood the character of Geralt, such as his mannerism and psyche. He offers a gruff and stern exterior, but there is a softness cowering behind his monstrous frame. His interactions with Yennefer and Ciri are genuinely touching, as Chalotra’s sorceress is deeply connected with Cavill’s Geralt. This intense relationship will be difficult for The Witcher season 4 to replicate, with Hemsworth now taking over as Geralt.
There is still a chance that Hemsworth can replace Cavill without too much of a jarring transition and work to replicate and build on the previous depiction of Geralt of Rivia. Unlike Cavill, he has a model to base his performance on, and he could improve on some elements of Cavill’s portrayal if he plays up Geralt’s more benevolent side. It remains to be seen if The Witcher will recover after Cavill’s exit, but the future can still be bright if Netflix handles it right.
