Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye has been battling a binge-eating disorder, and says that the journey hasn’t been quick, but it has been rewarding.
Jonathan Van Ness from the Queer Eye Fab Five recently opened up about his journey while recovering from his binge-eating disorder. He has always been candid about his personal life with his fans on social media and in the press. Jonathan is the founder of his company JVN Hair, and is also an author on top of being a reality TV star.
In an interview with People, Jonathan shared that being so open about his journey has helped him in the healing process. While it hasn’t been all at once, he is proud of the steps that he has taken so far to get to where he is now. “This isn’t instantaneous. Healing and recovery is something that I think we’re always in a relationship with,” he shared in the interview. Jonathan’s journey began when he made an Instagram post in October sharing that he suffered from a binge-eating disorder, and that he knew it was time to take care of it and himself. Speaking up about it was the first step in a long ride of healing. He says it’s important to “Bring that shame out into the open, and then it doesn’t have to be scared anymore.”
Jonathan Has A Strong Team Behind Him
Along with being open and direct about his personal experiences, Jonathan says therapy has been one of the most beneficial things for him. He said it has been “really helpful and really useful in having the strength to be that vulnerable and to share that journey,” before adding, “I have a little team that I go to that’s been helping me navigate.” Along with his therapist, he has also been working with a nutritionist, which is a great advantage when working with any eating disorder. Jonathan has always been open on Queer Eye about his life to relate to the people that are brought on the show, and he is no different on social media.
It is easy to tell that the Jonathan viewers get to see on every episode of Queer Eye is the same Jonathan in real life. He has been vulnerable about his struggles with gender identity, being bullied in high school, and other hardships from his past. However, Jonathan has managed to use it all to turn himself into the wonderful person he is now. He is empowering, and anyone who watches his show or listens to his podcast, Getting Curious, would be able to see that about him.
With Queer Eye season 7 taking place in New Orleans, fans are excited and eager for the new season of the reboot to premiere. While there is yet to be a release date, fans are still hungry for more of the iconic show and the return of Queer Eye’s Fab Five. The beauty guru has grown so much since the debut of the reboot, and having support from his fans and castmates will only help him even more. No eating disorder is easy to overcome, but with a strong foundation and a willingness to be honest and open, Jonathan will surely be able to rise above it and come out even stronger than he was before.
