Exclusive: Stranger Things cast addition Eduardo Franco discusses his new role and what it was like joining the hit sci-fi series’ universe.
Eduardo Franco discusses joining Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. After the Duffer Brothers successfully ensnared audiences with three seasons of the hit show, Stranger Things season 4, part 1 will premiere on the service on May 27, 2022. Stranger Things debuted in 2016, following a group of kids in the town of Hawkins, Indiana. Featuring a distinctive retro flare and throwback 80’s tones, Stranger Things interweaves terrifying paranormal activity and supernatural elements with alternate dimensions and compelling character dynamics. The series stars an ensemble cast including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Cara Buono, Dacre Montgomery, and Maya Hawke.
Stranger Things season 4 will pick up several season 3 storylines. The rescue of Hopper from a Russian prison will be a primary focus, while dealing with a horrifying new enemy surfacing out of the Upside Down will be another angle. The latest season 4 trailer places a heavy emphasis on an ominous creature named Vecna. The Hawkins gang’s latest enemy is supposedly more powerful and bewildering than the Demogorgon or the Mind Flayer, dubbed by the Stranger Things cast as an entirely new brand of horror for the series. However, frightening creatures are not the only new additions to Stranger Things season 4, as the Byers family and Eleven have made some new friends in California, including Franco’s Argyle.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Franco discussed his role as Argyle and what it was like to join the Stranger Things universe. Franco revealed that he watched season 1 from beginning to end when it first released and became a huge fan, and later finished the series after his casting. The actor also shared his experience meeting the original Stranger Things cast members, noting how much they had grown up since season 1 aired on Netflix back in 2016. Read his comments below:
Exclusive: “Yeah, I remember when the first season dropped, I remember I loved it. I watched it beginning to end. Yeah, dude, it was sick. But I’m the worst when it comes to TV shows. I can’t ever finish them. I do that with a lot of shows, I start them, and I never finish them … With this show, I finished watching it when I booked it because I was like, “Well, I got to know what’s going on, right?” It was just so crazy. In my mind, I’ve always had what they all looked like in the first season, and then, seeing them later in the show, I was like, “Oh my God!” It’s such a drastic change seeing how much they’ve grown up and then seeing them in person. I was like, “What the hell. These are grown-ass adults. It’s so crazy how big they’ve gotten … I mean, it’s just an honor to be a part of it.”
Franco’s new character, Argyle, is Jonathon Byers’ friend, described as a ‘stoner’ type who encompasses an all-around chill and philosophical vibe. Some have even compared Argyle’s temperament to Sean Penn’s Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, another California-set story. Stranger Things’ official social media accounts first revealed that Argyle would be joining the series in November 2020, along with numerous other new characters coming on board. Co-star Wolfhard has previously called Franco’s lovable stoner Argyle “brilliant.”
While it remains to be seen what Argyle ultimately brings to the storyline, Stranger Things season 4 is gearing up to be one of the most intense and terrifying renditions of the hit series to date. With so many dynamics at play, including an unprecedented threat from the Upside Down in Vecna, integrating new characters adds another layer to this multi-faceted series. Nevertheless, all will be revealed shortly, as Stranger Things will re-emerge on Netflix for season 4, part 1 on May 27.
