Marvel had some ups and downs during Phase 4, but after their massive panel in Hall H, our reporter at SDCC is excited about the franchise.
Part of the fun of following the MCU is knowing what the final destination is. Going back to Phase 1 and the original Avengers movie, Marvel has always excelled at outlining their plan, getting audiences hyped for the next several years of films. That’s what made Avengers: Endgame such a memorable experience. It truly felt like the culmination of a decade’s worth of storytelling, bringing together a plethora of characters.
Post-Endgame, I haven’t felt that kind of excitement from the MCU. Sure, I’ve enjoyed individual movies and shows on their own merits (watching Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters made me feel like a little kid). But when I stopped to think about the larger picture, I had this feeling Phase 4 was a bit meandering and aimless. For the first time, I didn’t know what Marvel was building towards. All of the movies and shows they’ve released the past couple of years felt like a random collection of projects and I was starting to wonder how it’d all come together.
After being in Marvel’s panel at Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, my concerns about Marvel’s future have been alleviated. We learned about Phase 5 AND Phase 6, which will culminate with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, we know what the new endgame is for Marvel, and it will be exciting to see how it all comes together. That was one of their greatest strengths in the Infinity Saga. Each movie helped push the overall story further, whether it was an individual character arc, or something larger involving Thanos. Kang is the new big bad the MCU centers around, and it’ll be fun to watch the next few years of movies and shows in the Multiverse Saga.
