Warning! Spoilers ahead for Secret Invasion episode 4. Marvel Cinematic Universe featured a very expensive bottle of bourbon in Secret Invasion episode 4 that has previously appeared in another MCU Disney+ show. Nick Fury’s fight against Gravik and his men continues in the episode titled “Beloved.” The roller coaster outing features a few big plot twists that will have big narrative ramifications moving forward. That includes the resurrection of G’iah after she was fatally shot by Gravik in the episode, the confirmation that Rhodey is indeed a Skrull, and the heartbreaking death of Talos.
In one of Secret Invasion episode 4‘s quieter moments, however, Fury reunites with Rhodey for the first time since their last intense meeting. This is on the heels of the former SHIELD director’s emotional sit-down with his wife, Priscilla. Surprised to find Fury sitting in his hotel room, Skrull Rhodey engages. As they measure each other up, Fury tries to defuse the situation by offering Skrull Rhodey a drink of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon.“23 years of distilled perfection! I figure we could settle our beef like proper gentlemen,” he quips. Understandably, interest in the bourbon immediately shoots up.
Nick Fury’s Favorite Bourbon In Secret Invasion Sells For Over $5000
The bottle of Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve is prominently featured in Fury and Rhodey’s latest conversation. After one sip, Fury exclaims: “Pappy! You outdid yourself on this one.” After Rhodey expresses his skepticism, the one-eyed spy convinces him by saying “$5,000 worth of 24-karat liquid gold.” Despite dealing with shape-shifting aliens trying to take over Earth, Marvel Studios keeps Secret Invasion‘s storytelling grounded. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Fury’s Pappy Van Winkle is actually real and is available for purchase — for those who can actually afford and find it.
The standard retail price for Pappy Van Winkle is actually just $299 and is the flagship batch from Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery Company based in Kentucky. However, since it is very rare, it rarely sells at that price. Fury doesn’t lie in Secret Invasion when he says that his bottle is priced at $5000. In other cases, a bottle can even go for much higher. Aside from having limited quantities, each barrel of Pappy Van Winkle also takes 23 years to be aged, which makes it so much more difficult to acquire. No wonder even Skrull Rhodey wants to keep the bottle for himself as he kicks Fury out.
Pappy Van Winkle Also Appears In She-Hulk: Attorney At Law
Despite the high price tag, it seems like Marvel Studios is making the most out of its Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23. Before Secret Invasion, it previously appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law episode 2 as a plot device, albeit in a less tense setting compared to Fury and Rhodey’s session. During Holden Holliway’s bar scene with Jen Walters, the bartender looked at him first before pouring her some, effectively informing fans what to expect from the older gentleman. It’s highly unlikely, however, that a random bar has a bottle of the rare bourbon sitting in their stash. Ultimately, it’s more believable that Fury has access to it.
Secret Invasion airs new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
