After Marvel Studios’ SDCC panel about the rest of the Multiverse Saga, Kevin Feige hints when they might finally announce an MCU X-Men project.
Kevin Feige reveals when Marvel Studios might announce an X-Men project. The mutants have been expected to join the MCU for a while now since Disney acquired the rights to Fox’s TV and movie assets. Despite several hints, including the revelation that Ms. Marvel is the MCU’s first mutant, it’s still uncertain what exactly is Marvel Studios’ plans for the X-Men and mutantkind.
The MCU returned to San Diego Comic-Con Hall H with a bang, laying out the blueprint for Phases 4, 5, and 6. Feige spearheaded the presentation which unveiled MCU’s full Phase 5 slate, as well as a few details about Phase 6. This included the confirmation that the next Avengers double-feature will be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars — both releasing in 2025. Meanwhile, the Fantastic Four reboot will kick off Phase 6 and is slated to premiere on November 8, 2024. As packed as Marvel’s SDCC 2022 panel was, there’s some disappointment that there’s still no word about an X-Men project.
On the heels of his Hall H presentation, ComicBook caught up with Feige and asked about the matter. The outlet jokingly said that at this rate, the mutants may not come until Phase 10. The MCU architect laughed it off but shared that it might be too long of a wait if Marvel Studios is going with that. “You wanna wait til Phase 10 for the X-Men? Alright, that’s longer than I wanna wait, but I guess. I’ll follow your lead, sir,” Feige said.
With Phase 5 now fully laid out and Phase 4 coming to an end with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the only plausible release date for an X-Men MCU project for now in the Multiverse Saga is in Phase 6. Aside from the Fantastic Four and the next two Avengers blockbusters, there are no other confirmed projects for the said Phase. It’s also possible that Marvel Studios is saving the mutants for Phase 7, which won’t presumably begin until at least 2026. Considering the franchise’s full slate with the arrival of Kang the Conqueror and the introduction of other characters such as the Eternals, Shang-Chi, and Moon Knight, Marvel Studios has the option to delay using the X-Men as it already has a lot on its plate.
In any case, Marvel Studios has other avenues left in 2022 to properly announce an X-Men project that’s reportedly called The Mutants. There’s still the D23 Expo, which is set for September. It’s possible that instead of a movie, Feige decides to debut the mutants via a series that would allow them to better tackle the team. It also effectively differentiates the MCU’s roster from Fox’s iteration. It’s also plausible that the announcement is being saved for Disney’s Investor Day. Otherwise, if the X-Men really aren’t coming until Phase 6, SDCC 2023 seems like the best place to confirm the project, alongside the Fantastic Four castings.
