It’s not yet clear just how many more seasons of Netflix’s Sex Education will run, but there are already many theories about just how the hit series will end. The series has proven to be a significant ratings success for the streamer, largely because it manages to be both very funny and emotionally resonant. Just as importantly, it also treats its teenage characters with dignity and respect, and it engages with the fraught issue of human sexuality in a refreshingly candid way, showing how it can be both very complicated and hilarious.
Human relationships in many forms are at the heart of Sex Education. Throughout its various seasons, couples form and break up, and each season features a unique mix of hilarity and pathos. Its sharp writing and the rich performances from its cast allow Sex Education to create characters with potent emotional authenticity. Their lives, loves, and struggles are both particular to their circumstances and universal enough that they can appeal to a wide variety of audiences from every walk of life.
Otis & Maeve Get Together In Sex Education’s Ending
Otis and Maeve are one of the most important couples in Sex Education. Their on-again/off-again dynamic provides much of the tension in the series’ existing three seasons, and as season 3 unfolds, it seems as if they might have finally figured things out. However, Maeve’s departure for America seems to mean the end of their romance. One theory proposes that they could get together and bring the series to a close. Given how central to Sex Education Otis and Maeve’s relationship has been and how much viewers have been asked to invest in them, it would make sense for them to be one of the series’ final couples.
Otis Becomes A Therapist & Maeve Stays In America
Otis might have some difficulty wrangling his personal life, but he consistently shows that he has his mother’s skills in helping others navigate the fraught terrain of human desire. Likewise, Maeve demonstrates that she has a mind that flourishes when consistently challenged. If Sex Education wants to give both characters a chance to realize their full potential, it makes sense that each would follow their own path. They might love and care for one another, but ultimately they each have their own path to follow as Sex Education ends.
Adam And Eric Get Back Together
One of the more notable aspects is its emphasis on LGBTQ+ characters. Sex Education’s Eric and Adam might seem like an incongruous couple, but each brings something useful and valuable to their relationship. They ultimately split up in season 3, but there is still reason to hope that, as Adam accepts himself, they might yet find a way forward in their relationship. They love each other, so it’s mostly a matter of each of them accepting the other as Sex Education marches toward its final season.
Adam Gets Together With Rahim
Adam has had a deeply confrontational relationship with Rahim, particularly since the latter was in a relationship with Eric. Each of them is trying to recover from the heartbreak of losing Eric. Sex Education season 3 shows Adam and Rahim drawing unexpectedly closer together, a reason to think they might form a romantic relationship. Rahim loves deeply, so it would be pretty satisfying to see him develop a romantic relationship with Adam. As Sex Education draws to a close, he might be able to provide the troubled teen with the stability he desperately needs and craves.
Eric Moves To Nigeria
Season 3 of Sex Education includes a lot of character growth for Eric, particularly once he travels with his family to Nigeria and has a personal awakening. Visiting his familial homeland profoundly impacts how he views himself and his place in the world. In addition, he encounters the LGBTQ+ community there, which helps him realize how much he wants to be with someone who can accept him. It would be fascinating to watch Sex Education’s Eric move back to Nigeria after he graduates, perhaps as an activist for LGBTQ+ causes. Eric has never been shy about expressing himself, which would give him a chance to grow as a person and character.
Moordale School Isn’t Destroyed (Allowing For Sex Education Spinoffs)
As season 3 of Sex Education unfolds, the fate of Moordale itself becomes increasingly uncertain. Indeed, the finale makes it unclear whether the entire institution will be sold to developers or somehow saved. At this point, it seems likely to close down, allowing the various students to move on with their lives and education. However, the building itself will most likely remain, if for no other reason than to provide the series with future spinoff opportunities.
The Father Of Jean’s Baby Is Someone Other Than Remi Or Jakob
Otis’ mother, Jean, is a true highlight of Sex Education, and her liberated attitude toward human sexuality extends to her life. Indeed, season 3 of Sex Education contains a bit of a mystery, as it’s unclear just who is the father of Jean’s newborn baby. The look on her face when she gets the results of a paternity test—a mixture of aggrieved and surprise—suggests that she isn’t happy about something. It could undoubtedly be the case that the baby is either Remi’s or Jakob’s, but given how much Sex Education likes to subvert audience expectations, the father may be someone else altogether.
Sex Education has repeatedly shown remarkable skill in keeping viewers invested in its various characters and their romantic lives. These people lead rich and sometimes exasperating personal lives, and, as such, each season of the series has raised new questions and issues. So as Sex Education enters season 4, it makes sense that it would begin to set up its end game. Whether it ends with season 4 or 5 or something else altogether, it could conclude in several fascinating ways.
