How the Ending of Chainsaw Man: The Movie

Warning! This article contains major spoilers for Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc

Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc is the cinematic event of the year, with a spectacular display of madness and tragic romance. While its theatrical release led some fans to mistakenly believe that Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc doesn’t connect to the main story, the film has paved the way for a second season of Denji’s misadventures.

Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc‘s main story lines focus on Denji trying to come to terms with his feelings for Makima and Reze, as well as Aki’s new partnership with Angel. While Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc doesn’t end with a shocking cliffhanger, it lays the groundwork for a new season, developing the characters in deeper ways than expected.

What Happened to Reze at the End of Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc?

Reze’s origins remain unknown until the final part of Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc. As Reze is seen about to board a train to Yamagata alone after Denji offers to escape with her, Kishibe confirms to Aki Hayakawa that she grew up as a test subject in the Soviet Union, being trained to become a warrior from a young age.

Reze changes her mind about running away alone and heads towards the café and meets Denji, but she is intercepted by Makima and Angel. After her arm is severed, Reze keeps attempting to attack Makima and activate her transformation into the Bomb Devil. Sadly, Reze is pierced by Angel’s spear and shown in a pool of blood, suggesting her death.

Although this was a tragic ending for Reze, who managed to steal the hearts of the fans, it was clear that the Public Safety Devil Hunters wouldn’t let her go easily. Reze was dangerous, both for the survival of Denji, who was serving the organization, and for the interests of Japan, as she was an agent from another country.

Is Reze Officially Dead After Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc?

Although Reze appears to be dead at the end of Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc, there is a chance that fans will see more of her. Being a human-demon hybrid, Reze will not die easily, not even with her heart pierced. This is evidenced by the numerous times Denji suffered fatal attacks.

Furthermore, Makima could use her incredible destructive powers as a Bomb Demon to her advantage, making Reze more useful alive than dead. However, there is some ambiguity in Makima’s words, so it’s possible that she would have let her go if she decided to leave the city and only killed her when she tried to take Denji away.

How Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc’s Ending Sets Up Season 2?

Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc includes a post-credits scene that fleshes out Denji’s character for the upcoming season. As a hint of what’s to come in Chainsaw Man‘s story, in the final scene of the movie, Denji is surprised by Power after waiting all day for Reze at the café with a bouquet of flowers.

Denji was sad because he believes Reze escaped without him. However, Power’s spontaneous and narcissistic nature restored Denji’s sense of humor, and the film ends with the two fighting over the flowers. Although this scene seems insignificant, it highlights that Denji will return to his previous routine, living with Power and Aki, working for Public Safety, and following Makima’s orders.

Furthermore, thanks to Kishibe’s words, fans now know that even international organizations from the Soviet Union are after Chainsaw Devil’s heart, which means Denji will be at risk again in the new season. This gives fans a clue as to what to expect for the return of Chainsaw Man Season 2.

What Will Happen With Aki and Angel in Chainsaw Man Season 2?

Aki in episode 11
Chainsaw-Man-Episode-11-Aki-Hayakawa

Makima questions Angel about why he didn’t invite Aki to support the fight against Reze, concluding that it was because he considers him too kind for killing a girl. Angel also asks one of Makima’s rats if it’s nice to live in the city, suggesting that he’s changed his mind and no longer wants to return to the countryside.

This brief exchange implies that Angel is being considerate of Aki after he saved his life, which he nearly lost due to the shockwaves of the battle against the Bomb Demons and Typhoon. However, to save Angel, Aki sacrificed two months of his life.

These were subtracted from the two years the Cursed Devil revealed Aki had left in episode #10 of Chainsaw Man Season 1. Aki doesn’t have much time to take revenge on the devil who killed her family, so Angel’s collaboration as her partner will be crucial for what’s to come for him in Chainsaw Man Season 2.

Did Reze Love Denji in Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc?

Denji and Reze kiss

Although Reze’s sole mission was to steal the Chainsaw Devil’s heart, it’s clear that something inside her changed after meeting Denji. Upon meeting, Denji gave Reze a white daisy, which she kept in water. However, at the end of the film, Reze donates to a group that collects for the Devil’s Victims, for which she receives a red daisy.

Since red daisies are associated with passion and love, Reze’s decision not to board the train subtly symbolizes her love for Denji. However, it’s left ambiguous for fans to decide whether they believe Reze loved Denji romantically or if her affection was platonic, as she felt understood by him due to their difficult childhoods.

In Denji’s case, he initially didn’t consider leaving with Reze, as he didn’t want to abandon his city life. However, Denji was willing to give up everything for her when he suggested they run away together. Unfortunately, Denji’s bittersweet ending of feeling abandoned by Reze puts an end to their tragic romance.

Where Does Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc Leave off in the Manga?

Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc covers the Bomb Girl Arc, adapting part of chapter #38 to chapter #52 of the manga. That means fans eager to know what’s next in Chainsaw Man‘s story should pick up volume 7 of the manga, which starts from chapter #53 and sets up the International Assassins arc.

Chainsaw Man‘s manga is available to read in its digital version on Shōnen Jump’s app MangaPlus. While Chainsaw Man Season 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed, recent updates suggest the anime will return sooner than expected. Nevertheless, Denji’s journey has just begun and doesn’t compare to anything fans have seen so far.
