Hogwarts Legacy’s Professor Weasley is the oldest known member of the Weasley family, meaning she shares a distant but important relation with Ron.
The latest original character in Hogwarts Legacy dons the surname of one of the Harry Potter franchise’s most significant figures, Ron Weasley. Professor of Transfiguration Matilda Weasley will serve as Deputy Headmistress in the upcoming game. Given Hogwarts Legacy‘s late nineteenth-century setting, the Transfiguration Professor will be one of the oldest known members of the Weasley clan. But considering the sprawling lineage of Arthur and Molly Weasley in the books, piecing together her relation to Ron will not be a simple task.
Out of all the Weasleys possibly hidden in Hogwarts Legacy, Professor Weasley is the only one to be confirmed with concrete details about her backstory. Prior to joining the School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, Professor Weasley was a talented cursebreaker at the Ministry of Magic. She eventually left this position to assume the role of Transfiguration Professor at Hogwarts. Considering that Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall taught this subject before becoming headmasters, Professor Weasley was likely a well respected witch in her time. This sets up a contrast with Ron’s immediate family, as Arthur is famous for working in a disrespected position in the Ministry associated with Muggles.
Professor Weasley May Be Ron’s Great-Great-Great-Great Aunt In Hogwarts Legacy
Although her relation to Ron has not been revealed yet, Professor Weasley is likely the Harry Potter character’s great-great-great-great aunt. Ron’s grandfather Septimus Weasley married Credella Black in the early 20th century. Credella was the granddaughter of Hogwart’s Legacy‘s Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black, placing him four generations before Ron’s time. Given that Matilda works directly beneath Phineas and appears around the same age as him, Matilda is likely four generations older than Ron. And given that she is depicted as not wearing a wedding ring, it is likely one of her siblings would become the great-great-great grandfather of Ron, leaving her as his great-great-great-great aunt.
Professor Weasley May Rival Phineas Nigellus Black In Hogwarts Legacy
Professor Weasley’s family ties may illuminate what role she plays in Hogwarts Legacy‘s story. In the game, the Deputy Headmistress will work under Headmaster Black, with whose family the Weasleys share drama. When Ron’s grandfather Septimus married Credella Black, she was promptly disowned by her father, Arcturus Black II. This was because the Weasleys protested against the pride of the “Sacred 28,” which refers to the 28 remaining Pure Blood families. Though Septimus and Credella won’t be featured returning characters in Hogwarts Legacy, this preexisting tension between the Pure Blood supremacist Black family and the egalitarian Weasley clan may play out between Professor Weasley and Headmaster Black.
The potential for a rivalry between Professor Weasley and Headmaster Black could also develop due to their relationships with the main character. Headmaster Black is famously the least popular headmaster in Hogwarts’ history, as he cared less for students than his societal position. In contrast, Professor Weasley is invested in caring for students and especially Hogwarts Legacy‘s protagonist. Professor Weasley’s character card on the Hogwarts Legacy Twitter page explains that she “introduces [players] to their Wizard’s Field Guide and Room of Requirement.” Headmaster Black’s apathy and Professor Weasley’s kindness could thus create sparks as the protagonist gains notoriety at Hogwarts.
Though Hogwarts Legacy‘s now-confirmed Weasley family member may only be distantly related to Ron, it’s fitting that she cares so much about her students. Just as Ron helped introduce Harry to the Wizarding World, so too does Professor Weasley introduce players to some of their most important tools at Hogwarts. The depths of her character and her relationship to the rest of the Weasley family remain to be discovered in Hogwarts Legacy.
